    Offer to buy the materials and find a high school near you that participates in the FIRST robotics program. They'd probably be happy to practice problem solving and building.

    Of course, your BF is pretty handy...but seeing as how it took you until nearly spring to get working heat...the high school may be a better bet.

    My neighbor jokingly said to teach the chooks to let themselves out and it made me start to wonder why not? I've been thinking about finding a latch that you could push a button to release. Put that on the inside, train the chickens to peck at it, and then they'll let themselves out in the morning.
