Baby Chick Drinking Water But Not Eating

How is your baby doing today?

Hi, she seems to be doing okay today. She slept well last night under the heating plate and she walked/moved around a bit since I found her in different place in her coop. She's standing up today and just walked around a little again. Her eyes are open and her feet still seems a little cold. Thats been going off and on unless we wrap her in a blanket and she gets warm. She has been ruffling her feathers this whole time that she's been sick. I just fed her some water and she drank that as well as her electrolyte water. I'm going to get some vitamins today to put in her water as well as some yogurt and try and feed that to her today to get some food in her. Today is the 3rd day and unlike the first day, I'm kinda glad she's standing up and walking around a bit but she's still weak and tired from no food. Will keep updating. Thank you so much!

Here's my baby this morning. She just stands there and sleeps and walks around occasionally. She's also still opens her mouth at times. I'm not sure if its because she has something stuck in her throat or if she's gasping for air? Also, should I keep her under the heating plate or is she's fine like that as is? Since I live in Hawaii and we have so many feral chickens here and in general we haven't figured out what breed of chicken she is. Anyone know what breed she may be? Will keep you guys updated. She looks very weak and lethargic. The first thing we consider is coccidiosis when seeing that, and not eating. The buttermilk can be given undiluted. Just use that or the plain yogurt, but the yogurt should be mixed in a little water and feed to make a thin paste. Only give about a tsp of the yogurt daily. The buttermilk, she can have more of, along eith her water.

If you are lucky enough to find the Corid, or if you could get sulfa antibiotic, you could use either to treat for possible coccidiosis. If you use Corid, then stop any vitamins that contain B1 thiamine for the 5-7 days she is on Corid. If you have to wait for shipping, I worry about her, since it needs treatment right away. It is always hard guessing what is wrong with chicks, as there are many things that cause problems. I hope she perks up.

I went to the store and thankfully they got the Corid! I mixed it with the gallon water as you stated. I also got VetRx on the side in case. I'm wondering how many times a day should she drink this? And is it one TBS? one TSP? Again she is just one month old and this is just for her as I have no other chicks.

You can mix a smaller amount 2.5 ml per quart if you wish. I would also give her 2 drops of the undiluted Corid twice a day orally to jump start her treatment.

Vet Rx is similar to Vicks vaporub. There is a mixture of herbal oils and camphor, and there is nothing that could treat a respiratory infection. Some people use it, but if you use it, follow the directions on the label.

The only one they had available was the powder. And sorry, I was asking how many times a day she should drink the Corid but you have stated already that that should be her only source of water and I've been giving it to her throughout the day so far by spoon and she's been drinking it. I also tried giving her the yogurt earlier today too with the little bit of water to make it thin but she doesn't want to drink/eat that. So far she's just been wanting to drink water. She's opens her eyes, walks around, and sleeps most of today, but still no eating I noticed her feet is cold at times. I've been keeping a heating plate in her coop in case she wants to go under it. I'm also going to try and give her some of the buttermilk soon and see if she'll drink that. I always thought milk would make them vomit so I'm surprised about the suggestion of giving buttermilk. But anything to help my chick is very much appreciated and I appreciate all the help you are giving so far!

Just concentrate on thr Corid right now, and wait on the buttermilk for when the Corid is finished. She can only drink so much, and that needs to be the medicated water. The buttermilk has probiotics and it would have been good to give if you would have had to wait on shipping. I hope this helps her.

Update on my Nugget this morning.

This is her when I woke her up to drink some of her medication (Corid). I decided that I would give her some of it undiluted since I didn't yesterday and then I went ahead and made a fresh one with her water to give her for the rest of today. She still seemed tired when I woke her up. She opened her eyes and would walk around slowly. I noticed she stumbles at times when she does. She is still drinking her water but no luck with her eating. She still doesn't cheep but I noticed she looks around now for a bit unlike the first few days when she got sick. I also put some of the VetRx on her nose, mouth, and wings yesterday.

I'm worried about her intake of food since its already 4th day that she has not eaten anything. Are there any suggestions of what I can give her that she can eat? I tried mixing her chick feed with water but she doesn't take it. Her drinking her water still is a good sign and she can drink a lot via spoon feeding so I'm hoping the Corid is kicking in and helping her feel better within the next few days. She's currently resting under her heating plate right now and I'm giving her water every hour.
