Baby chicks and sunlight

I am getting my first chickies in a couple weeks, and am blessed to have a nice sunny spot indoors for my chicks... they will have a cozy brooder with heat lamp, and is it also ok for them to be in the sun? or is it better they are in my office in indirect sunlight? thanks so much in advance... getting more nervous as their arrival date approaches!!

It's better to start your own thread than to add to an old one. Most people will read the first post and answer a question from years ago rather than yours.

But, there is nothing wrong with chicks being in a sunny place and having a heat lamp unless doing this creates an oven. You need a well-ventilated brooder with room for them to escape the heat and cool off. Sun provides natural vitamin D so I'd use the sunny spot if at all possible.

ok thanks! and thanks for the advice about starting a new thread... wasn't sure if that was "allowed" if someone was already talking about it... still learning the ropes here! thanks again!

Welcome to BYC!

FWIW, I'm brooding outdoors and their mini-coop has transparent corrugated roofing to let in light (once the trees leaf out, it will be in deep shade). I'm finding that I need to use only 100W for temperatures in the 25-70F range and unplug when it's warmer during the day because even with good ventilation, the sun provides some heat and they start panting at 73. So much for chicks wanting 90 degrees at one week of age!

At one day shy of 18 weeks my EE laid her first egg :) And I caught the whole thing on camera!
