Baby Chick's Momma Killed By A Dog. Advice?

My quick run solution is a big round bale hay feeder with a tarp over the top. These are for daytime use so they don't need to be quite as secure- -no raccoons should be out during the day. The feeder has a thin metal wall about 30 inch high and supports which elevate the upper part that keeps the cows out of the hay another 30 inches. A tarp provides shade and protection from ariel predators, the open sides provide excellent ventilation, and the lower wall provides security. It's open on the bottom allowing your birds access to whatever ground it sits on and it's light enough for one person to move. If you want more security it's easy to wrap chicken wire or hardware cloth around the outside and tie it down.

You can adapt the basic concept to other similar frameworks like an old trampoline or the support structure for a small aboveground pool, even something like an old kitchen table, a big wicker chair, or a lightweight picnic table for a smaller number of birds. Move the chickens into the run in the morning and transport them back to the co-op before it gets dark out.
