baby duck with lots of problems

We have lots of ponds near where I work. I see the Canadian Geese and their breeding season seems to be from February through end of April or so. I've experienced first hand how protective they are, but I've never let them see me scared. Your geese are just beautiful!! I think I like the lighter colored one (not the white

) best. Are they like ducks...needing a few females per male? Do you think I could get by with only females? At this point, my plan is to steer clear of hatching. I purposefully got ducks that are typically not the broody type.
Geese mate for life and ganders are very happy with only 1 mate some people keep trios and sometimes the gander won't have a strong bond with the second goose. If you don't want babies and I don't let mine hatch any believe me 4 geese are enough for me maybe if I had my whole 5 acres fenced in but I don't. Females are fine to have by themselves. Their eggs are so Delicious I made some awesome omelets and egg salad out of them.[more like a huge chicken egg] than duck egg. The lighter one is my American Buff she isn't as large as my other 3 either and their personality is suppose to be more laid back but she had bad influences here with the ganders so she would go after the other members of the flock too. lol No matter geese will go broody you just take their eggs is all. I have to deal on a daily basis with the biggest broodys' ever Muscovy. Oh my gosh do those girls love to brood they just don't get to hatch.

Then last year in June we added 2 goslings Babe who turned out to be a gander and Toots the light one who is American Buff is the female they were 1 yrs old last of May I got them as 2 day olds. Missy and Sammy lost their only gosling to make it to hatch it died trying to hatch. So we got these 2 for them after I kept them for 3 weeks while Missy got over brood and loss I gave the 2 to them and they have been one happy family ever since.

Oh my goodness they are precious. That was so sweet of you to get two babies to add to the family. Thank you again for sharing these beautiful geese with us.

If you can treat it early it's much easier to heal. I haven't had to treat any of my water fowl but did have 2 hens with bumble used Epsom salt soaks and colorless iodine worked great.
What did you do to treat Topper? always good to hear everyone's treatment method.
We soaked her foot in Epsom salts and then sprayed with bactine and wrapped a gauze around it. She kept getting the gauze off so I bought a little puppies boot and put that on her foot. About 3 days later the bumble came to a head and hubbie used tweezers to get it out. I almost fainted. We put neo on it and knock on wood she hasn't had one since.

Deb let us know if you get a goose. I would love to one but I don't have enough room here and my goodness 40 years is a long time. That means I would have to live to be 103 years old to raise one.

My pleasure I love talking about my flock with others who love them the way I do.

We love hearing the stories and of course the pics. My family does not understand my love for my chickens and ducks either. Hubbie loves them too and caters to their needs.

I'm sitting here watching Que Sera in the back yard from the window. I think Thelma and Louise are trying to socialize with her. They are bobbing their heads and eating grass close to her. I guess their trying to get in good graces with her who knows they might be her mothers in law soon. They both claim Yoo Hoo and Hershey.

I will come to this very thread and post away if I get geese. I probably won't make any additions until next Spring.

Thanks always good info. I never thought of a puppies boot I bought chicks shoes and it took Lizzie about a week to ruin them . ended up with holes in them from her trying to scratch while she had them on. Totally destroyed. lol

Aww poor froggie. are you going to get him a new mate?

I hope Que Sera enjoys her out door time today I bet Yoo Hoo is waiting for her.

Geese can actually live longer than that someone said of one who lived up into 80's. Carolina Water Fowl rescue has geese 40 yrs and older.
I'm going to try and find him another mate. The only problem is I have to find one that is about his size. They eat anything that is small enough to get in it's mouth.

I don't see or hear Que Sera outside. I need to go check on her. lol

Carolina Water Fowl rescue must take great care of their geese for them to live that long. Thats amazing.

The little doggie boot worked fine. At the end of the time I had to throw it away because she had so much dirt of it. I bet the neighbors thought we were nuts having a duck running around in boot. I hope Clyde keeps his gauze on I will never find a boot to fit his big foot. I wrap them in vet wrap so I'm sure he is going to need plenty of that.
