baby duck with lots of problems

Chicken math and duck math get the best of us. I was finally down to 12 hens and a roo and my lil game bantam goes broody, dh says you know Rufus is getting close to 6yrs we better think about another roo soon well I didn't want to bring one in from outside so we got outside eggs. Then my lil Lavender Orp goes broody after 3 yrs old goodness so I got 3 eggs for her from same source. They each had 3 eggs and only hatched 2 each so I guess that is still considered birth control kinda .

I stay away from TSC and any feed store that has ducklings, gosling or chicks during spring I know my weakness.
Now wait a minute you now have 4 chicks trying to get one rooster. You could have possibly had 6 chicks trying to get one roo. Thats chicken math for you.

Usually I sit in the truck when hubbie mentions they have chicks inside. That time I went in then the two little sex links by theirselves I felt sorry for them. Now the brats are jumping my old hens and driving them bonkers. Poor Bubba my head roo can't protect all the hens by himself. Dottie the head hen helped him out the other day. She come storming out of the coop and jumped Jackie Chick(sex link roo) while he was jumping Skittles. Never a dull moment around here. Hubbie tells me you know if you give them away their going to eat them. That makes me feel guilty but I know their going to get worse as they age.

They really do, we Have to eat our extras by 16 weeks and over they will play havoc on the hens. Right now the young roo is pretty much being beaten up by his sissy not bad but she puts him in his place and also the younger pullet [I think is a pullet she has been putting a whopping on him, not bad but just kinda like watch out buster. Hopefully by next couple weeks I'll know for sure on my 2 youngest.

Patty another reason I don't go in we stopped at a feed store down the mt for shaving and I had never seen chicks in there well he had them and their waterers were full of shaving I stood there and scooped all the wet shaving out right in front of him he didn't even bat an eye, made me so mad, poor things had no water. I cannot stand to see poor babies left either, makes me feel so sad many reasons I don't go anywhere there are chicks ducklings and goslings.

I know I can't stand to see someone mistreat an animal or bird. I'm glad you cleaned out their water bowls. Surely he got them some water after that.

Thats good the other two chicks are keeping the roo in his place. Hopefully you have only one roo let us know how that goes.

I looked at the weather forecast and we have one more day of 50% chance of rain then Saturday we have sunshine. Yeahhh. This mud is driving me batty. We had about five minutes of sunshine today and then it was back to cloudy.

Funny and we're hoping for some serious rain fall they are finally talking drought. Thankfully we have a spring and well just hoping the spring keeps running that is how I take care of my birds.

i hope you have a beautiful weekend lots of sunshine so maybe all the mud will dry out. What are your temps we had 88 today not normal for us norm is around 84 in mid summer.

Great I'm glad they predicted some rain for you. We've been in the low 80s since this monsoon moved in. It's 77 now so the heat wasn't bad. When you get that rain I hope it fills up your spring and well. We have a big rain tank that the gutters are hooked to and we water the chickens and ducks with that.

Yes I am looking forward to sunshine and less mud. We have some stepping stones in the side yard to get to the coop and they are underwater. I'll be able to let Rhonda runner and Uno out when it dries up. Her pen has a big umbrella in it and a little house so they are staying dry.

Que Sera wouldn't let me catch her today. I wanted to hold her again but I didn't want to run in all that mud.

This is one of the quail chicks she was in the brooder with, the tux in the middle, it was soooo cute watching the little quail snuggling up with her to sleep. As she got bigger her buddies were younger ducks as they hatched. We originally tried to move her to the big pen in the shed where we put the ducklings as they outgrew the bins but settled for keeping her with one buddy, they aren't in the same pen but can still see each other thru the fence.

We called Clyde the expectant father and during that time it was in the high 80s and 90s when he sit and sit. I wrote a little story about the kiddnapping I didn't put it in this thread. I'll have to look it up for you and let you know the name of the thread and what section I put it in.

Robbie of course is on the phone now but I'll ask him if it possible to download your pics off that type of phone onto your puter. I have no idea how to do it. If it wasn't for Robbie I couldn't post any pictures.

Patty
Clyde really is a sweetie. So attentive a duck bird he is.

I'd love to read that story Patty, if you can find it. I bet it is super entertaining. What are ducks thinking?

Please do ask him when it is convenient. I wish I know how to and I wish the mobile version of BYC would let me download pics from my phone into the mobile site. Maybe it does and I just don't know how.

OK, that is so sweet and look how cute all of them are too.

Hahahaha. Too funny. Que Sera was NOT in the mood. And she knows going thru the mud will deter you. I love her. But, dang it, Que Sera, let Patty hold you.

Julie I know the oldest one of the 4 is a roo because of stance and hackle feathers around his neck, the chick who hatched with him is a pullet[hen] crowing can begin as early as 14 weeks but they sound like a kazoo when the first start. I have a EE hen who crows too. lol My youngest 2 I am pretty sure one is pullet the other is still throwing me off. [they do this on purpose] to keep you confused till the last minute.

Heeeheee. How dare the silly things do that!! Is the roo's stance an assertive and commanding one?

A hen that crows? Wow. I did not know that. If someone like me who has zero experience or knowledge of chicken birds heard Miss EE hen crow without seeing her, would I think she was a boy?

Ah, I bet the kazoo sound is adorable.

I cannot believe the literally hundreds of different breeds of chicken birds. It is amazing. Are pullets those little chickens that are kinda fluffy and long haired looking?
