OH, Miss Lydia. I am so sorry. As you know I am all too freshly aware of your situation. I had been thinking of you all week. I am glad he is in a place of peace. I am glad you are back. I did miss you but understood your circumstances.

Speaking of heat, it's reached us in Oregon. Today's high will be 101. Oh, yay.

I'm in Oregon too, lucky you for it only being 101 it's going to be at least 106 today and the weather guy said that it would probably be even higher than that. It really worries me because I've lost two chickens this year to heat stroke I think, I thought it was some illness and was keeping them put up so the ducks wouldn't get sick as I treated it, I think now though it was too hot in the coop. Especially since when a partial necropsy was done nothing was found wrong with them. Anyone have tips on how to keep them cool? I put frozen bottles around the yard for them to lay by, they've not figured that one out yet though, I've also got a fan in the coop and give them water melon and stuff. When I notice them panting with wings out I do chicken dipping, full up a bucket with cold water and set them in it

Anything over 80 degrees in Oregon is not weather it is punishment. What we do here in West Texas if the frozen jugs of water thing but we put them in their coop where it is a bit darker and where they are comfortable and safe. We have a fan that is actually outside the coop but blows in through a window then we hang a jug or two (from a chain) inside the coop where the fan wind blows over the bottles. That, and the frozen bottles on the floor, actually lowers the temp in the coop by 10-20 degrees plus it creates a nice cool breeze. My hens then spend their day playing snuggle with frozen milk jugs. Here we want to not only keep them out of the hot air outside but out of the sun when can be deadly. Just FYI. When they say it is going to be 106 that is the predicted temp measured in the shade. Sun temps will usually be as much as 25 degrees hotter than that.

It's miserable, isn't it? Here in Seattle we just keep breaking heat record after heat record. Never in the city's history have we ever had 10 straight days of 90-100 degree weather. It's scary, isn't it? I grew up in Los Angeles and I can't tell the difference in weather at this point!

Wobbles loves playing with ice cubes, but surprise of surprises, Bean's terrified of 'em. Luckily she seems better at regulating her body temp than Wobbles. I think there's just something about being a white duck; he's got some odd issues that no other duck I know has. I think it has to do with his breeding and his color; kinda like how Westies have a lot of inherent skin and teeth problems, you know?

We've already made the decision that if it gets too hot for the girls and all the dipping and frozen stuff we do doesn't help then we're loading them into kennels and brining them into the back room (air conditioned house). I'm just thankful that our ducks don't care how hot it is because they've got two pools and shade all day
