I was at the feed store yesterday and was looking at the baby chicks. There were several that had what looked like poo on their butts that was harden on. this is the first time I had seen this. what causes this? What do you do for it? are they OK?

Its from the poop sticking and drying to there fuzz and building up. You would have to soften and clean the poo off. They cant poop otherwise...kinda like constipation for them. I give mine ACV (apple cider vinegar) in there water to make there poop more solid so it wont stick.

Thanks for the info, I will go back and get them and clean them up.

It's called Pasty Butt. Usually at the feed stores where they have a large number of chicks, they don't have time to go through and check & clean everyone of them. Its normally only an issue during the first week of life. Out of our 20 chicks we have 3 that needed to be cleaned off in the first few days we had them. But after that, no issues.

Thank you, I got 25 EE and none of them have it. I was not sure if they were just not being feed right or what.
