Raising chickens makes a good story. Back to nature, back to our roots, locavores unite!

I'll never break even on chickens. But then again, where's the break-even point on owning dogs or cats or horses? We enjoy them for themselves. The fact that they supply us with delicious, hormone/antibiotic free eggs is a bonus.

There's no doubt in my mind that a goodly percentage of those who buy chicks will drop out within a year or less. They'll tire of the commitment and cost. What worries me are those who will keep chickens but not monitor their flocks for disease.

Maybe Jack Shafer is doing all of us at BYC a favor if he discourages the fad-seekers from getting into chickens or makes those who are serious about chickens take the enterprise *seriously.*

Well, that is true. I just cna't understand why people would even fork out the money for everything to raise chickens just to abandon idea in a few months. Maybe its just me, but I have to really be commited to spent money on things.

I got into the "fad" subconsciously I think. I have never known anyone that owned chickens, live in a major city and just bought three to test myself and then I found out about BYC after the fact.

Meh. Who cares about it being a fad or not? Call it a hobby and enjoy it for what it is: raising chickens for eggs. None of us would post here if that weren't the case.
