Bad footsie folks any idea?

Removed cut small portion from bottom but foot infection causing sunny unable to bend claws / foot or perch and still lame with bad limp

I have struggled with at home remedies some work fast. Some no results… when it becomes overwhelming to try to help the issue … I Time contact my vet….

Hi @Boxingrooster , you have already received stellar advice re no more surgery, but I may be able to further explain what you are seeing. The visible damage (hard rigid skin on top of foot, toes unable to bend, swelling, etc.) is due to residual damaged circulatory injuries in that foot, even though the initial injury occurred many weeks ago. Her immune system is fighting valiantly to heal the foot, but any healing is taking place underneath the outer rigid, inflexible, necrotic skin. The reason you were advised to do no more surgery is because at this point, cutting into the foot is much more likely to introduce infection rather than remove any that may or may not be present. Damaged skin should not be removed or cut into because it protects healing that is taking place underneath. The rigid, inflexible outer skin will very likely eventually slough off, hopefully revealing healthy, scaleless, new pink skin underneath. Sunny may also lose the remaining inflexible toes, but it remains to be seen if she will lose her foot, or if there is healthy tissue underneath the necrotic outer skin. Definitely continue with soothing Epsom salts soaks and keep your medications (including Vetericyn) handy. Also do your best to keep the foot clean and dry. (Except for Epsom salts soaks.) Though the outer damaged skin forms a protective barrier against bacteria, remaining healthy tissue will be vulnerable for a few days after necrotic damage sloughs/falls off, until Sunny's immune system forms a protective barrier over the newly exposed skin and tissue too.

Here is an article that may help you better understand the process Sunny's damaged foot is going through. It includes general information as well as the progression of visible damage and eventual healing. Though the article is specifically about frostbite injury, the visible progression of symptoms and appearance resulted due to damage to the circulatory system and can have many other causes too, including a too-tight protective bandage, a feedbag string becoming wrapped around a bird's foot, etc. The damage to the bird's feet within the article was catastrophic, and Sunny's injuries are hopefully not nearly as severe, but either way should lend you more understanding.

That’s awesome in-depth assessment thank you , re inflexible toes one of them seem like additional injury now possible fracture
( severe bend to side )from maybe just sudden burst movements when close to her older sisters. But will continue soaks and God willing sunny keeps all and digits. Will def review article , much appreciated

Just an update folks . She’s back w her sisters with little limp and still somewhat swollen foot but appetite and I think overall looks ok
Think this might be end of line and as good as she’s going to get
