Hi there, welcome to BYC!Can anyone tell me what is happening to my buff orphingtons bottom? She’s laying
and acting normal.
Thank you in advance
Hi there, welcome to BYC!
How old are your ladies and what are you feeding them on a regular basis.. including treats and supplements?
First things first.. do a parasite check after dark using a flashlight as this will give the clearest true picture. Get the other gal checked to.. part feathers below the vent (on the other gal) and on the abdomen and look for crawlies running away.. Also, note if skin is pale flesh colored or angry red.. also are there any "dirt" clumps hanging onto the feather close to the body?
While you're inspecting these ladies.. try to take note of how puffy/pudgy.. or swollen the abdomen feels comparatively between the two gals. Also.. is this bald area hot.. like it's infected?
One suspect or possibility.. that is genetic and SOMETIMES presents early on like this.. which Orp happen to be known for.. Fatty liver hemorrhagic syndrome.. Usually in a genetically predisposed bird.. that is also fed a high energy diet with excess treats (corn, scratch, etc)... sometimes results in sudden death, often blamed on heart attack unless a necropsy is done to confirm cause of death.
3rd possibility which is what I treated my Orp for with no change to the condition is known as vent gleet.. a yeast infection.. it looks too clear for that to be a serious consideration to me.. but I am brainstorming the things that I know.. please use your best judgement according to what YOU are seeing.
I determined my lav Orp we called her poo butt patty.. most likely had a genetic predisposition to the condition.. despite the fact that I'm a treat miser.. She was beautiful, appeared to behave normally, and laid as well. I have needed to treat for lice/mite but that did not appear to be the cause of the abdomen balding as I check often and treat before infestation has taken place. Also no other bird in my flock of 82 displayed that condition.. and it was also NOT picking.
Sorry for not giving links right now.. but these are good places for you to start your investigation and try rule things in or out. I'll check back in on ya, but hopefully you will get some more sage advice.![]()
