Yes, I would agree. I can't see that red in a female at that age... not as if she'd be close to laying.
Is my logic flawed? That's how I think of the strong red in hens.

I have a blue mottled cockerel, but none of my girls are mottled. I hatched a bunch of mottled chicks, which means at least one of my girls is a mottled carrier..
Gave eggs from one of my black hens to another broody.
so far, she has hatched 3 of 5 eggs. Here are 2.

All 5 hatched for my splash broody sisters. And it's evident that my black hen is carrying mottled. The 5 chicks are 2 black and 3 blue. One of each color looks solid and the other 3 look like they will be mottled. Yeah!

Don't think i showed this to you all. I thought it was funny. I was following my flock around, trying to get some pics to submit for the calendar. My blue hen was pecking around and the rooster was behind her. I snapped just as she squatted for him! Turned out to be kinda a neat pic!

I sold my favorite little splash pullet yesterday.
Customers came to get a couple chocolate orpingtons and saw my little splash and wanted her too.

Guess I'll have to hatch more.
