See http://www.sv-barnevelder.de/farben.html
It
shows some of the colours in Bantam Barnies, including the brown ones ('dunkelbraun').

chook

Thank you! I looked and looked and looked for photos, but couldn't find anything but the double laced. I can see that my red one is definitely not the "dark brown" variety. I guess she just doesn't have good barnevelder lacing or coloring. The different coloring does make it easy to tell them apart though and that is handy - we keep them as egg-laying pets.

The leg coloring is different also - barnevelders have yellow legs, but the welsummers don't. Your rooster didn't look exactly like a welsummer to me either, just remarkably similar coloring.

I think you are mistaken welsummers do have yellow legs show me that they dont. That welsummer pic I put up is a show quality bird

I was looking at my birds today and I think I may be at fault for some of color problems I have to young roosters running with my hens 1 is very red and the other one is much darker I didnt know that the red was a bad thing before and I was selecting for it because I liked it some of my hens are very dark and others are more brown now that I know the diference I will breed for the darker birds. I will post pics of my rooster tomorrow.

This is only a guess and I'm not even sure if it could happen but if you feed a lot of corn it might lighten the males feathers. I know it causes white breeds to look brassy. Just a thought.

Here are some pictures of our Barnevelders

Do you think that Barnies may be the next "hot" breed?
I love mine well enough but there aren't as many posters to this thread like there are on the Marans thread. Is it only because Marans are "hot" right now?
I have both breeds but haven't even started with the Marans yet. Most are still too young.
The Barnies are fun and very attractive. I like working with them.
