Barnevelder breeders lets work together and improve the breed

Hope everyone is doing well:) I haven't been on this thread as much as I used to. Been busy:) My first Barnevelder chicks of the year will be hatching this weekend.

Some pics of my cockerel and some pullets from last year's hatches.

I just love these birds. They are on my wishlist.

Hi Elizabeth,

I'm here in Elizabethton TN...northwest corner. Mine also quit laying. All four of my hens just up and quit. One of them was sporadic..nothing to count on. But, I started giving all my girls cayenne pepper sprinkled in their food a few weeks ago...guess what. They started laying again! Their combs are turning from pale pink back to red. So, I'm not worried about it. Many breeds stop laying. This is my first winter with the Barnies...they are doing well. What color birds do you have?

I have blue, black and splash and they are starting to lay some now. I guess that just need a break in the winter.

Hello, I have 2 questions about barnevelders.
#1. Are they friendly to other breeds?
#2 Are they good for first time chicken owners.
#1 - Yes
#2 - Yes

They are the most laid back chickens I've ever had. I have never had a mean Barnevelder male. They do go broody though, so be prepared to have more of them.

There are places that will tell you that this breed are not suitable for children, hard to raise and train, or peck on other birds. I am so glad that my parents were up for the challenge when I was a kid. I was also warned when I picked one up for my son. No issues what-so-ever. We will be looking for more soon.
