Based on the white chest both younger and older pictures I would have guessed male.

I have about a 80% success rate with mine based on color sexing.

Happy Chooks and aceschix,
Thank you both. I will post another one at 4 weeks. Oddly enough, I hope he is a roo

This is my first chicken so I am at a loss. Does anyone know of any good breeder in Texas? I ordered some eggs (12) from CornerStone farms, but they shipped from VA and at this point only 5 are viable, not sure how many will hatch. I really wanted a total of 9. Any luck on anyone getting a silver Barnevelder? I read some other posts about them. They are SOOOOO pretty!

In the older picture it looks like a pullet too. I don't know many people from Texas, but eggs can be shipped long distances and yet still have good hatch rates. Keep trying

Look for breeders who have Johan, C. Ledford (vB) or Kelly Cratty stock. If they can't tell what lines they are working with then they probably have just hatchery stock.

A few people are working on making some silver Barnevelders here in the US and they are even very rare overseas. I'm working on Blue double-laced Barnevelders and may have some project birds or eggs available as soon as next year. They will still need work to get back to breed standard and anyone working with them will also need a good, solid line of pure Barnevelders with good type to continue the project. Silvers are harder to make because you can't keep crossing back to pure Barnevelders to strengthen the line.

If I can be added to your list, that would be awesome! I LOVE blue chickens!

I have a good chance of getting a great rooster - lot's of little boys to choose from.

My babies started hatching out around 3am this morning (of course I stayed up watching). Got a few pictures I thought I would share. So far 3 are out that pipped between 1pm and 4pm yesterday (hatched between 3am-6am), 1 pipped, 2 no pip but moving. They are so cute and fluffy! I even woke up my kds at 3:45 and they got to watch one of them pop out of the egg. This set of Barnevelders are from Andy in Corvallis, Oregon. So far they look great, no V's on their heads!

Expecting a dozen eggs from Johann to be shipped out around the the 20th so will hopefully end up with a nice group.

me too! I was worried the eggs being shipped from Oregon to Virginia would be too long a distance for them in the mail but 6 of 10 made it to lockdown and at this point I am counting this hatch as successful for me as it is my first.

Does anyone have a picture of what a "V" on the head looks like? I candled last night and the one I thought was not going to make it had a blood ring, not sure why I did not throw it out, but I will tonight. 6 look like they are still going strong. Due to hatch on 04/22.

PS acw123 congrats on the babies, can't wait to more pics
