Barnevelder breeders lets work together and improve the breed

That is great!

I've had great hatches and I've had eggs shipped to me as far away as VA. Had 100% development on that hatch and all but 1 hatched. The one that didn't was a full term chick, but one of the others knocked the egg out of the carton and the chick died. IMO it's all in how they are packed.

In the older picture it looks like a pullet too. I don't know many people from Texas, but eggs can be shipped long distances and yet still have good hatch rates. Keep trying

Look for breeders who have Johan, C. Ledford (vB) or Kelly Cratty stock. If they can't tell what lines they are working with then they probably have just hatchery stock.

A few people are working on making some silver Barnevelders here in the US and they are even very rare overseas. I'm working on Blue double-laced Barnevelders and may have some project birds or eggs available as soon as next year. They will still need work to get back to breed standard and anyone working with them will also need a good, solid line of pure Barnevelders with good type to continue the project. Silvers are harder to make because you can't keep crossing back to pure Barnevelders to strengthen the line.

I just saw this thread and haven't read most of it.

My daughter and I just attended and entered our two Barnie pullets in our first show (Little Rhody in RI). The judge had to pull out the breed standard as she was not familiar enough with the breed, admitting that she sees very few of them. She did say very nice things about our birds, commenting that we need to work on the yellow legs a bit, and one of the girls has a bit of ticking in her tail. Ours do lay some nice dark eggs.

I'm concerned that someone here on BYC is advertising Barnevelders as laying a "pale brown egg" and has pics on his/her website of them. Definitely not what we want to develop in the breed! Apologies if this person is already on this thread and this has been discussed.

I don't currently have a rooster, so am not in a position to breed right now, but would be interested in following this thread.

They aren't ready yet and I want to hatch out at least another generation or two before I even offer them as PROJECT birds. But, I can tell you I've have 2 blue pullets that are looking really nice that hatched about 3 weeks ago:) I'll post pictures of them in a week or two when they get a bit bigger.
