Here is my Lexie at 17 weeks. She has a rooster's coloring, but her comb is not as large as your bird's is. Either you have a slow-developing cockerel or a pullet with a larger comb than most of them. Looks like a pullet to me. You can't only go by the comb.

Here is Lexie's son at about eight weeks old:

I bought seven 12 week old barred rock "pullets" last year. ( that guy saw ME coming lol) They looked like pullets to me until about the 18th week. All of a sudden the eyes changed. They didn't look so dumb anymore. They looked a little more fierce. The combs looked much bigger, and the little bumps on their legs started looking alot like spurs. One by one, they all turned into roosters, beautiful barred rock roosters. Needless to say, I found homes for all of them and kept my one little Henny Penny and old Pimp Daddy rooster. I won't get taken again, I hope..LOL

18th week? That's very unusual! I can tell by a month old with some certainty if I have a BR cockerel. They have definite clues/traits, but you do need to know what to look for. Anyway, BRs are some of the easiest to sex early on.

I agree with speckledhen... they all look like girlies to me. All of my BR's are 19 weeks today and I knew with out a doubt which was rooster, which was hen... with BR's you can just tell. I do have 17 week old pics if you would like to see them... momma hen, who layed her first egg at 17 weeks has a nice big comb too.. look under egglaying forum... "finally got one, my first egg" there is a pic of her there. I do have more pics too at 17 weeks if you would like to see... just let me know

Sure, id love to see more pictures. My DH and I were away for the weekend and when we got home, he built one more nest box, we were one short. I then looked at my questionable girl, and her comb had grown EVEN more and the end of her wings have become very white:confused:...I have to take another picture. Haven't heard another crow since...but I am still so unsure. The girls are scheduled to start laying this week to next week...very exciting!

hahaha that'd be funny to see. Do i put an egg in EACH box? I wouldnt want them to get jealous of eachother. Also, what are some signs that they are getting ready to lay eggs? They are much more talkative lately. another thing, i have mean girls...i only go near them when im wearing rubber boots because they like to peck your feet...whats a safe way to get the eggs?? any gloves that can be suggested?

i know, im a wimp!
