This is a warning to all us chicken owners out there.
The other night I was attacked once again by my handsome rooster, Colonel. He's just protecting his flock! He likes a challenge every couple weeks or so, but if you fight back, he retreats and leaves you alone for a while. I used to be able to give him a few swift kicks with my boot, but he's cutting through my boots now, so I've been using a broom to swat at him.
Well, he challenged me again and I went after him with a stick. Unfortunately, he jumped up to spur me again and got the stick in the head. He staggered away and then collapsed. I was horrified! I thought I had killed him!
Luckily, he was only knocked out and got up a minute or two later. He was back to his old, ornery self by the next morning.
Well, I was so traumatized by the whole ordeal, I commented about it on Facebook.
Three days later, the County Sheriff came to my house to follow-up on a report that I had "beaten my rooster with a baseball bat." I told the sheriff all about it and said, "he's right over there!"
Then, a day or two after that, we got a call from a women who said she'd be happy to take the poor rooster that we're abusing.
I know it's safe to post this here, because I've read other posts about rooster attacks. But, outside of chicken owners, I don't think the general public understands about defending yourself against an ornery rooster.
Take care and beware!
