I've had neighbors like that. I saw his dog in the act of chasing my chickens 1 day. Since we don't have a gun i chased it with a 2 by 4. The dog got a big spanking from me and i found where it was slipping threw the fence. I'm sorry it happened to you too. I hope you can find some way to keep the brute away.

I am sorry to hear that. That must have been aweful to find them all over. My condolences and I hope you sock it to that RAT!

That makes me so sad ...to see all those mauled chickens!....my dogs get out once in a blue moon on accident...it DOES happen..and i have chickens!!..so i understand both sides...last week i was looking out my window..and a blk.lab walks by..going into my yard...my chickens were in the fenced in pen area(thank god)..but my ducks were in my yard un-protected..we ran out there...and with my neighbors help caught him..and called the dog officer...this week a lady comes to my door..saying that it was her dog that we "called the officer on"....and she just wanted us to know it cost her such and such amount of money..etc...but...she wanted to let us know that he was out AGAIN...and if we saw him could we please call her..?.(instead of the officer)...and sure enough..1/2 hr later..here he comes....i did call her..THAT time....but..if i keep seeing him....i'll call the officer again....just as i would expect someone to call if my dog got loose...actually..i would HOPE someone would call if i couldnt find my dog(and i'd pay the bill GLADLY)....i'd be worried sick!...although..with my dogs..if they get away from us...they go in the swamp and woods behind my house....and usually a package of bologna shown to them does the trick to get them to come home!...but i hear what you are saying....its the people that DONT CARE that thier dogs are loose!!!...thay take NO responsibility for thier dogs actions!!!!...like this lady..she was upset with me cause i called the officer and she had to pay..

First let me say, I am so sorry for your loss... I sure hope your one roo makes it... I'll say a little prayer...

I would agree with everyone so far on this blog... If you are certain that you know this person's dog did the damage, I would file a police report with comments about the dog running free and if you see the dog on your property again that you will shoot the dog to protect your livestock (chickens included).

If the dog has killed once, he'll be back again... It will be like a game to him/her and will kill for the sport.

If death to the dog should ever happen while you are protecting your property and livestock, this way you have it on record with the local police and the owner cannot come back on you.

There is a fine line in some states and counties regarding blaming other peoples animals in a case like this.

I read on another blog last week about this same situation. One of the BYC member went to court and won (won big) because the dog was caught with the birds in it's mouth. Another BYC member could not do anything or receive compensation for the loss of his birds because the dog in question could not be proven to have done the deed.

If your heart can take it and you are calm enough to speak with owner of the dog, you can see about compensation for the lost birds.

If you are like me and are in rural area, you could check with the dog pound to see if they can do anything about putting the dog in doggie jail. Maybe the owner will think twice about letting the dog run free if he/she has to bail it out of jail!

Of course, with the way the world works today, you may have build a run and keep your babie in the run during the day while you are away and let them free range when you are home.

I do hope things work out for you and your birds will not have to go through this again... Don't be discouraged...

That's just aweful!!! so sorry...can't even imagine.

If your chicky gets past the shock they should heal fine with some antibotics and some neosporine etc. I had a roo that was attacked by another roo, very badly, a patch of 2x3" of skin from head to neck -gone, could see skull & jaw bone points sticking out. Now he only has a scar where the feathers part and a bad eye, but acts like any other. best wishes...

Don't give up! A good fence and a few LGDs work wonders on stray dogs. A good strong chicken tractor is a worthy investment also, if the other is not feasible. First, though, I would try to get your investment reimbursed so you can afford to start again. So sorry about your loss!

I had this happen to me about a year ago. Lost 3 chickens and 2 more severely injured. My polish rooster had his neck pretty much ripped open, but I put neosporin on it every couple of days and he recovered wonderfully. Keep the antibiotic on it for a day or two then let it air dry for a day or two. Hopefully yours will recover also!!! I also had a silkie hen that survived with just a broken leg....I'm telling you the bottom half of her leg was completely useless and just swung from side to side but with rest and me hand feeding/watering her day after day Mother Nature did her thing and she recovered also! Good luck

I just want to offer my sympathy for your terrible loss and heartache. I can't even imagine having to go through that. You'll be in my prayers.

We found that when we occasionally needed to do some emergency chicken care, such as when a fox attacked our gorgeous white chicken, Magnolia (yes, we actually name all our chickens), that sprinkling the wound with a homemade mixture of cayenne pepper (to stop the bleeding and minimize shock) and garlic powder (a gentle antibiotic) helped. Magnolia survived two direct hits from foxes...only to be killed in her later years by a dog we'd adopted from a shelter, who escaped outside and got her...........I could have killed that dog, but we did return her to the shelter.

Free ranging chickens and free ranging dogs don't work out well. Go the extra mile and erect a secure fence.

If you must kill the dog, be careful. Just today I read an article in the paper about a fellow that tried to shoot a dog and shot his son instead.
