Bear Flipped over coop

Hmm...true that. How about ammonia-filled peanut butter covered balloons...Anyone?
Actually, my county said to use ammonia as a deterrent, but it only works for a short time if at all. I'm not sure if they still relocate. Bears come into many small cities and towns here....as well as out here in the county. We are bordering national forest so it's inevitable, I guess.

I should add that was 10 years ago or close to it. I have no idea what they say now. I don't know anyone who reports seeing bears now.

Shooting an animal is the last line of defense for me. I do carry a 357 magnum when in bear country these days, bear/boat air horn, a bell and am ready to give them my backpack, if pursued. That first happened to me hiking the Appalachian trail in the 1970's(throwing down my backpack). Bears figure out or can smell any gum, dried foods, energy bars, bars of soap(they seem to like them)that are in your pack! An old ranger told us if pursued to throw down our packs. We did and the large black male bear stopped and went to work on the pack while we put distance between us. It is very effective to bait live wires on a good fence for any meat eating predator and apple or peanut butter bait helps deer fences to be much more effective! Do not kill wild animals except as a last resort/self defense. An unbaited fence may work or not, on a determined, hungry, fast acting animal. The effectiveness is increased 10 fold by baiting the fence wires and if backed by a solid tall fence the wildlife seldom continues to attack! This is how, as a bee keeper, we used to protect hives in some areas. If it will keep bears out of beehives, it should be just as effective for chickens. There is a $10,000 reward for turning in anyone who shoots a Bald Eagle and significant cash rewards for turning in anyone who kills many species of birds of prey(falcons/hawks/owls). While most states have provisions for legally killing predators(including dogs and cats) attacking livestock, there are many rules and many species are not allowed to be killed for any reason, except by Game and Law officials. Also it is illegal to discharge a firearm in many cities, except to defend your life! I know someone who paid a $50 fine for killing a dog threatening his wife, for discharging a firearm in the city limits! The court maintained the proper authorities should of been waited for, (they had called the animal control) before he took action. He was also charged with reckless endangerment, but that was dropped, as well as a charge for destroying private property! He was forced to pay for the dog, a couple hundred dollars, despite the dogs owner also being fined $50 for not properly confining his pet. When livestock is concerned you have a bit more leeway, rather than when just people are threatened or attacked! Prevention is always the best way to go.

It is a well known fact that any wild animal that has lost its fear of humans is potentially dangerous. Children, even adults can be attacked and seriously injured if not killed by an animal that has lost it's instinctive fear of man.

A bear who comes onto property and kills chickens, will keep coming back. It's a disaster waiting to happen. Once it attacks, injures or kills a human, it's too late for it to be captured and released somewhere where it poses no threat. The Dept of Conservation will declare it dangerous and destroy it. This isn't a cute cuddly harmless creature we are talking about but a powerful animal who will kill in order to protect itself or yes, to eat and sometimes even eat humans.

And yes, I am also part Native American. Cherokee to be exact. And yes I am a hunter. I hunt for food, not for sport. In my case, I hunt deer and without hunting to control their population, deer can become destructive and develop diseases that can kill an entire herd.

YouTube is filled with videos of people who try to 'pet the buffalo' or get a 'close up selfie' of some wild animal that turns and beats the living CARP out of the silly human who did not respect the fact that they were indeed dealing with an unpredictable animal.

IMHO there is no way to live peacefully with a creature as big and dangerous as a bear when it has decided to use your property and livestock as an all you can eat buffet.

I'm sorry if I ruffle a few feathers but IF a bear or cougar comes onto our property and threatens one of our dogs or us, or kills our chickens, it will be dealt with. We will not wait until it comes back and injures or kills one of us. The state of Missouri gives us that right to protect ourselves and our livestock and no, I have no desire to kill a bear just for fun or any other animal. We love wildlife which is why we have over 22 acres of land that we have converted to habitat.

I just don't want to come on the forum and read about some member who has been 'dis-membered' by Smokey the Bear.

Blinding bears to let them die slowly is frowned upon also.
Bears hate bleach and ammonia smells. The ammonia-filled balloon is meant to act as a powerful deterrent when they take a bite out of it. Of course, there’s always a danger of harming them but it IS still an effective deterrent and that is why some sources recommend it for bears who don’t go away,

While bear mace can be an effective deterrent, it doesn't always stop a bear. Good to pack something heavier with you if you've got bears/lions in your area.
