Bear Flipped over coop

the electric fence isn't strong enough to stop a bear. Its for raccoons and dogs and things like that. Does anyone have any suggestions?

I have seen the suggestion to put some bait on the electric fence wire (smear of peanut butter, or tie a strip of bacon around it, or stick a hotdog on it, or something of the sort.) That would encourage a bear to sniff or bite, so it gets shocked on the nose or mouth (sensitive areas), instead of just pushing through the fence with a furry shoulder that won't feel anything.

(I haven't tried it, but I've seen this type of suggestion frequently.)

Oh my!

I don't have bear in my area, but I've read that the only thing that keeps them out is electric wire with a STRONG charger. You can probably get help on the Predators and Pests forum. :)

Same here, I have a friend who lives in NH had bears visit his coop many times trying to get in. Electric fence is what eventually stopped them.

Your only option would be a hot wire if you have bears that are comfortable with coming on your property.

I don’t like the “bait the line” thing cause really the bait is already there - your chickens.

To the people saying “shoot the bear” it’s not that easy. Sure people bear hunt and I think that’s the cruelest thing ever cause I personally love bears 🐻 and my Native American name given by my parents translates to “Little Bear Cub” so we maybe have more of a spiritual bond but anyways it’s not as simple to kill a bear as it is some other wildlife. Shoot the wrong spot of a hungry bear and now you’ve given away not only your location but made it angry = hangry bear.

A coop like yours was destined to be destroyed. It looks to be prefabricated and I imagine my husband could push it over so it was only a matter of time before something big enough and hungry enough came by.

Hot wire and guard dogs are all I could suggest. No coop will ever be built bear proof it’s just not possible. That’s like saying you can build a car strong enough to not be pulverized by a train. It’s just not happening.
Good luck and stay safe out there!
