Bear killing bunnies !! Can we shoot it ?

Hi there! We aren't too far from you and have had some issues with bear also, for those of you that are advising her to shoot it, keep in mind that a lot of bear are tagged and Fish & Game track them. From what we were told by F&G was that they have to be in your home or buildings causing destruction, and killing livestock. I have heard of people calling them because they had a problem, and were questioned as to if there was a food supply(like birdfeeders) out, and if so they should have taken them in, so they are not going to do anything as the bears were being fed. Please be careful, shooting a bear without just cause as they put it can amount to huge fines!

Ummm, sounds like a lot of meat that I am sure someone would be grateful to have. I'd kill it. Probably throwing out info. your hubby already knows, but just in case, tell him to be sure that whatever he is hunting with is really going to do the nessecery damage. Last thing he wants is an injured bear running him down. I love the wildlife where I live, but when it comes to the big and dangerous critters that become hooked on livestock/garbage/ ect. they should be shot. Right now it is your bunnies, next thing you know, it could be you, or a child harmed. Maybe not even hunted, but just attacked because the bear is now gaurding a food source. Every measure, IMO, that one can take within their means to advoid getting bears and other wild live habituated to humans should be taken to advoid this outcome, but once it is done, the animal needs to be taken care of. I have small children, my husband would have to beat me to the gun if we had something like that here. Good luck. And I hear bear stew is fantastic..

ETA, Just wanted to note that I would not shoot a bear, cougar, ect... just for passing through, I mean one that has decided my livestock is a buffet. Just wanted to clairify.

Don’t ask, don’t tell.

My wife was looking at places in Arkansas. She asked the sales agent about shooting Black Bear that threaten livestock. He said… if you shoot it who you gonna tell about it. And he smiled!

Well I called F&G and this is what they told me (like someone else on here said they told them)

There is a huge fine if you shoot and dont call an officer within 12 hrs to come check it out. They also will do an investigation of the area to see if it was necessary to kill it. In F&G's eyes its not a fair trade off to kill a bear over 2 bunnies (tho he did say they would refund me for any animals that the bear kills. but he thinks hens go for $3 and bunnies $5.... LOL... I said thanks for the offer but ive paid much more)

They also told me to put up and electric fence and bait it. He also offered to come help install one if needed. My only problem with electric fences is my 18 month old enjoys playing in the back yard and i would rather not have to guard the kid from the fence when we play outside ( the officer told me he would only touch it once before he learned

and tho i believe that its not the point )

Then he told me about some critter ridder that lets of some high pitch sound that scares them away......blah blah blah.

He asked me to call him back before we think about shooting it

I guess in the eyes of F&G "livestock" isnt bunnies or chickens. And its not fair to kill a bear over them

It is sad that hubby could get a big fine for protecting our 80 meaties, 100's of show silkies, 50 layers and a bunch of lionheads ive spent a good deal on. Maybe F&G would like to know the total amount of $$ I have in "livestock" so they can start saving to refund me

My only concern is we dont live to far from other houses if hubby shoots and someone calls the cops b/c of the gun shots then what ???

As far as him shooting it goes of course the bear would be processed for meat. We would never waste animal like that.

Well now you’ve gone and told someone. So what you gonna do when the bear decides to maul your 18 month old? I know that sounds mean but if it were my grandchild and a bear had already been destructive on my property it would be H I S T O R Y. But then I guess if it eats the kid they’ll let you kill it.
