Benefits of having a male bird

Sounds like you have my flock

Elvis has already 'taken on for the team". He was attacked by a hawk. He was nursed back to health, no small task having a rooster on your home for 3 weeks! He is fine now but is blind in his right eye. Doesn't seem to be to bad off.

Go Elvis! I'm so glad you were able to nurse him back to health. That took a lot of effort to keep a rooster in the house for 3 weeks!

I like that name. Some day I'll have an Elvis in my flock but he will have to earn the name. Maybe he will have a slick black hair-do or a shaky leg or maybe he will be able to crow more beautifully than the other roosters. When I get new chicks in the spring I'll be watching for Elvis to step forward and name himself.

My rooster is a good watchdog for the hens. If they wander off he's right there running over to see what they are doing. He also let's them know when he finds goodies to share. He growls at me when I go in the coop at night too but he's never been agressive toward me...well, one time I picked up a hen in the coop and she was squealing and he sort of lunged toward me. I just picked him up and carried him around for a minute, then he was fine...he knows who really rules the roost! He's a silkie by the way...

Great story. We have a Roo named Sid as well. It began life as Nancy but when it crowed you had to rename him and Sid it was! He is a SLW with a single comb and is Guardian and sometimes treat finder (he pulls the fake out move quite a bit as well). He is not friendly but not really agressive either, unless your holding one of his girls. He is definately the personality of the flock and I have come to appreciate his crow and so far the neighbors have not complained.
