Bento Box Fever!

I know my bentos are extremely boring, but DH has limited taste preferences. I know if I made sushi or rice balls, he wouldn't eat it... So, here's another boring bento.

Homemade Rice Cereal (it's milk, cooked white rice and sugar, he ate it as a kid alot and likes it. I've never had it. LOL)
Baby Carrots with Thousand Island Dip
2 Turkey and Cheese Sandwiches
Pretzel Sticks
Fruit, Chocolate & Nut Trail Mix
He also took homemade sugar cookies in his pouch.

Shellie, I use to eat that when I was a kid, too! Plus coffee(with milk in it)over crackers and sprinkled with sugar...that is what it is like being poor. ha
I don't post pics of my dh's lunch as you all post pics of good wholesome fat free lunches and my dh gets fat-filled hearty meals. ha ha

OK, if he likes rice pudding, what's NOT to like about rice balls?

Here's an idea--make SWEET ones! There's not law that says rice balls must be savory. Cook the rice with milk instead of water, flavor it with sugar instead of salt, and put some sort of sweet filling that he likes (if any) in the center!

Funny story--I looked for umeboshi, the traditional onigiri filling, in my Whole Foods a couple weeks ago. Long story short, HOLY COW. Those things were PRICEY! Who knew pickled plums were pickled in liquid gold?

We didn't get any.

I was there last Tuesday and looked at them and walked away. That's a lot of money for something I don't even know if I'll like!!

They are expensive.....but they last forever...

Not too many kids like them... too tart!!

One plum would be too much for a rice ball.. in fact, I would probably get 5 or 6 rice balls filled with one plum. They are VERY tangy...

But I love them....

I usually go to the Japanese Stoe (we have one in Jacksonville) and a small 1/2 lb container costs about $5 and some change.

Plus I love breaking one up and just spreading it over atop my rice.

Kinda like wasabi.. It will clear your nostrils!!!

No Whole Foods stores in Jax yet... or Trader Joes... when I lived in Atlanta, I loved going to both of those!! There is a Fresh Market, but they have not expanded that much into the oriental foods.

But who knows, by the time I come back from Iraq, we'll have something wholesome opened.

I so want a rice ball right about now!!!

P.M.. Ninja....I read the soap thread.. I ordered 2 of Susan Cavitchs books to read while I'm here.. am excited about making homemade soap when I get back.. and the cucumber recipe sounds like a winner. Lots of good info on that thread!

Just an idea to throw out....

Every once in awhile.. when Im making rice (I use my Zorushi rice steamer), I add peas... You can use this to make rice balls as well...

My mom used to make this when I was small, and I have followed the same tradition with my children.

Just throw in a handful of peas while you are cooking it. Don't use canned... they are too mushy... Use frozen petite peas, They work well and retain color and firmness. Its really yummy!!

I hand roll my rice balls... with a little sea salt.. OMG, so yummy!!

I been following this thread for awhile, everything looks so wonderful. I just made an order to ichibankan. How long does it usually take for one to come in?

Keep those ideas coming ladies, I'm in a chemo fog with no creative ideas flowing at this time!! All the pictures help my warped brain come up with fun things to eat now!!!

I think both of my orders were here in less than a week. Hugs and positive thoughts headed your way, and prayers as well if you'd like them!

i was really happy about the silicone cups since they're diamond shaped and the halloween colored bento tupperware. the cupcake, food picks included a witch, pumpkin, bat and a ghost. they are very adorable in a halloween kinda way.
