Best chicken for little kids?

Silkies are a child's best friend. Extremely gentle yet sturdy As long as the child knows how to hold a chicken and has learned how to be gentle a silkie could become their new best friend. My 18 month old loves the Silkies because they are so soft.

I'm gonna have to pick up a few silkies for myself....er...my kids now. I miss having them around!

Wonderful choices. Sussex seem to be one of the most consistently lovable breeds out there. Also, if you do indeed go through with Buckeyes (a very nice option, indeed), try to keep an eye on them. Mine, both standard and bantam, are bullied rather profusely.

Funny silkie story

I was convinced my one special chick I had picked out a boy from straight run. At about 14 weeks I heard the most pitiful attempt at a "crow". Yep. I'd gotten a boy. The other 6 were red sex link and I knew were girls. Oh the dreams I had about what frankenchicken would come out of that cross. I religiously collected the 6 brown eggs to ensure no little surprises could hatch out. Low and behold around 22 weeks DH came in to the house laughing holding his hand out.

DH finally caught his breath long enough to tell me to count the eggs.

Actually I mentioned them to the park commitee as well so don’t yell at me! Lol
Some park member said they had d’Uccles once and they weren’t cold hardy at all. It gets pretty cold here. Are your d’Uccles hardy?

Brahmas and buff Orpingtons are known for being cold hardy and they’re great with kids, I think that mix would be lovely at a park
