The dollar per gallon sale at petco ended like a week ago. Now I have to wait 3 months or so before the next one. I can get a 20 gallon tank for my crabs and then have a 10 gallon one to put a betta in.

What about the free one from your teacher? That is looks to be 20-30gal. Then you only need to get the 10g.

Current plan:
Step one: Wait for petco dollar per gallon sale while saving up money
Step two: Upgrade hermit crabs to 20 gallon tank
Step three: Take 10 gallon tank from crabs and put a male betta in it
Step four: If I can secure tank (it's either 29 gallons or 40ish gallons based on proportions, I think) put either: betta sorority OR pair of fancy goldfish in it

I think it's suitable for betta's to be in a low profile tank versus height cause they have to swim up to the surface to breathe. A 20 gallon long tank would be great but very oversized for the size of the fish. Just a thought.

20 gallon long tank won't fit in the space I have for the fish, and then I'd have no use for the 10 gallon if I upgraded my crabs.

Look on Craigslist for used fish tanks I always see people selling it, some are priced very reasonable. Just make sure there's no cracks or worn out silicone on the seals.

Betta fish don't have to breathe at the surface unless water conditions are bad. This isn't a small tank so the length/height shouldn't be a problem here, there's plenty of room for a betta fish to maneuver. I kept a couple female bettas in my 20H planted community tank and they typically patrolled the upper 2/3rds of the tank and explored the rest at their leisure, no problem getting to the surface when they wanted to.
