Is a 10 gallon tank too big for one? That's what I was thinking I might use. Do females need other fish with them? I was thinking male. I was thinking a beta because they are beautiful and you only need one. I don't have a budget in mind-this is still all theoretical. Parents said that they are open to the possibility of a beta fish or a hermit crab if I'm the one paying for EVERYTHING, including continued foot and maintenance, which I haven't done before. I'd be doing all the care, obviously. My current budget is that I don't want to spend ridiculous amounts of money while putting together a good habitat for betta or hermit crab-because there's no set timeframe on this, the I can probably save up a good deal of money.
In the UK...5 gallon is minimum. US keeper feel 3.5 gallon is ideal minimum. I had kept a lone betta in 20 long. Ideally 10 gallon is better. You can divide the aquarium in half to have 2.

The Bigger the aquarium, the less maintenance you need to do.

We do have a few fish stores near us I can try.
They come from the same place, regardless of where you go.. that rant about bad breeding practices or whatever it accused fails to take into account other things like removal of species from the wild and such.

I've bought plenty of fish from Petco, Petsmart, etc.. and never had any issue with disease or deformities or anything like that .., they most likely come from a fish hatchery some where and get shipped in plastic air filled bags just like they're sent home with customers... Many of their fish arrive weekly and go out on weekends with rapid turn around.. and many of the tanks being interconnected to broaden the water parameters.. Fish breeders.. especially that would select for anything.. are fewer and farther between than chicken breeders..

The stuff that goes on behind the scenes at SOME smaller pet stores will be just as if not more appalling than that of the companies mentioned!

I know, it can definitely be confusing. Water changes are a controversial topic, and everyone has a different opinion. But, I can say one thing. Bigger water changes won't stress the fish out, as long as the water you're putting into the tank is roughly the same temperature as the tank water. When it comes to water changes, more fresh water for the fish is always better. Just don't overdo it and do 100% water changes every week. :)
Was it you that said my 10% suggestion was old school? And also that chlorine WON'T evaporate?

Well, it's true I haven't kept fish in some time.. or researched new information in the past half decade..

Chlorine WILL evaporate.. (even if it wan't you that said that) :)

I quoted your post though, so that I could say.. I can basically agree with this.. noting that having the back filters or other media that retain the micro organisms would be key in addition to the temperature you noted to not causing any shock..

It's with two T's..

It is a possibility that I may get a betta fish. I am adding up costs and when I try to find a filter I see a lot of filter cartridges or refills but very few actual filters. What filters have you had success with for your betta?
When I was about 12 years old I got into fresh water tropical fish and Bettas were one of my favorites. I used to keep them in a 10 gallon tank with a cheap underwater corner filter attached to a small air pump. I would add live aquatic plants some of them the floating type. If you divide the tank with a piece of glass or plexiglass and put a female on the other side the male will build a bubble nest and dance in front of the female. If the female is willing and able they will mate when you remove the divider if not I think I remember the male killing the female in his pursuit of her. My dream as a young boy was to own an Aquarium Shop and breed freshwater tropical fish. I have several tanks but as of today all of them are stored in an outbuilding. I have bred Angel Fish in a 90 gallon tank and have owned up to 120 gallon tanks. If we lived closer I would give you a 10 gallon tank etc. to get you going. Just don't put 2 male Bettas together they will kill each other and the males are also very aggressive to the females. The most beautiful freshwater tropical fish there is IMHO.

I have two female betta fish. One of them is big and lazy so I have her in a 10 gallon fish tank with assorted live and fake plants with 12 small tetra fish and 3 shrimp.

My other female betta fish is smaller but is more curious and aggressive. Shes in a 10 gallon tank with assorted live and fake plants with 4 scissortail rasbora fish.

For both of the 10 gallon tanks I use a petco brand filter but if you are willing to pay more for something better then do it. Also, the my betta fishes fins will sometimes get caught on the suction part of the filter. @black_cat.

That sounds so fun! I would love to see the bubble nest and dancing but I think that one fish is the most I can handle, so definitely not babies. All of these fish sound so cool! I had originally thought about bettas because I know that they live alone and are very pretty. I appreciate the sentiment with the tank! I don't think that my fish plans will evolve as far as yours have, though.

Your setup and your fish both look great! I love the coloring on your fish, and the different colors of gravel you have in there. The little silver and red fish are also super cool!
Thanks! The smaller fish in the first tank are ember tetras, neon tetras, a black neon tetra, and a glowlight tetra and the betta fish's name is Amber. The small fish in the second tank are scissortail rasboras and the betta fish's name is Luna.
