Big Bird "tries" to help in the garden

Well I let Big Bird out to run around in the yard some this afternoon after he spent his first night out in the barn. When I let him out I first took him to his little kiddy pool so he could take a dip and cool of a little (thats why his baby fuzz looks so mangy and rough in the pics). I then started back across the backyard and curiosity got him, he saw my dad in the garden and took off to see what he was doing. When he first got in the garden I dont know if he liked the feeling of the fresh tilled dirt under his feet or what but he started rolling around in it and kicking and jumping every which way. He then went on over to my dad and saw the organic potting soil mix that he had just spread on the ground, of course curiosity got him again and he got 2 big mouthfuls before I could run him out of it. My dad then starts to plant some watermelon seeds and Big bird was right with him watching every move he made.

Hmmm . . . the eating dirt thing: opinions please: is it necessary for their digestion? My emus happily eat as much soil as wheat as they scoop it off the ground; and their blessings are often the colour of the dirt that their wheat was lying on. (Felicity insists on blessing the car port.)

I'm not sure the true reason for it, but it must be important to them as all mine will eat it down by the mouthfuls.

I guess the bits of stones and gravel they pick up with it helps grind food.... but mine like pure dirt also. If I dig a hole, you bet they will be right behind me eating the fresh dirt.
