Birdwatching Chat Thread

Pics
Once I had a music teacher who loved fishing, and he said you have to watch out for birds when you toss out your line because several times he has hooked gulls! Once he said that he hooked a fish and was reeling it in when an osprey dove down and snagged his fish, which was still stuck to the line!
That happened to us once when I was a kid. It was a gull that grabbed the lure!

I need some help guys. Yesterday we saw a Cardinal chick on the ground, but the parents were watching it, and it could flutter a bit, so I let it be.

Just now, I found what appears to be the same chick, but it can barely hop/walk, and can't flutter. I kinda think it's not using one leg. I saw the parent feeding it, but it won't be able to get away from any predators. I nearly stepped on it, it was so slow.

Is it better to take it inside (or possibly a rehabilitator if I can find one), or leave it be? What are the chances it'll survive if I leave it?
I did pick it up to examine for injuries on it's legs, but I didn't see any obvious ones. I put it where I found it when I was done.

It would be best to call a rehabilitation place to take further action because it is illgal to take baby chicks out of the wild without a permit. If you can, try to get their help to put it back into the nest if you can't. If there is no rehab place nearby then you could call your town's office for permission to raise the chick or other advise, which can be, sadly, if no one can handle with the chicks injuries, put it down. But don't rush to the last oppion yet!

I’m so sorry I didn’t get back to you sooner!
Thank you for the advice, but unfortunately the chick didn’t make it. When I got home on Saturday it was dark, so there was nothing I could do then. On Sunday morning, that poor chick was found dead. Not sure why it passed.

I would have replied sooner, but I’ve been dealing with a lot. Some idiot opened our rabbit hutch and bantam coop Saturday night, and I spent a few hours in the dark digging a hole under our shed to retrieve the rabbit that escaped. Sunday I had to add about 40 pullets/cockerels into my existing flock, and today I lost a favorite chick. She was always smaller and weaker than the rest.

Poor chick. Sadly this happens naturally all the time so don't feel like you caused it.

If you can I recommend that you put number locks on your coop and hutches and also place some cameras. Also contact the polic, fingerprints might be around. Unless you know who it was.

Yeah, I should put some locks one the coops and hutch. It’s just that there’s so many doors! I’ll probably buy locks tomorrow.

I’ve had incidents like this before. Someone opened the main coop door, and a coyote killed the majority of the flock because of it. And once someone shot the coop window with a BB gun. The police took notice in the latter incident.
Thanks for the advice!
