Black Austrolorps~Good Layers?? ~~

My Black Australorp girl is the most sensible bird I have. I would not trade her for anything! She is in her third laying season, and last week she laid 6 eggs for 7 days.

I don't have an egg scale - - and of course no store-bought eggs for comparison -- but I will try to post pics later today. Her eggs look like a large storebought, from what I remember of storebought.

They are a lovely medium brown, sometimes with light speckling. Not all birds will have the egg speckling.

I like this breed so much that I now have more eggs in the incubator . . .

Mine laid all winter and also during the heat of the summer, nice large eggs and beautiful friendly birds from my experience. They are my favs out of EE's, Marans, and Orps. If I could only get one breed, BA's would be it.

I live in the everett area of washington, and I have 2 australorps. with no extra light, they've been pumping out 2 eggs, 2 eggs 1 egg, <repeat> since they started laying last november.

I love my girls. of course i feed them collard greens or mustard greens or chard, on top of their regular layer mix every day and they got to freerange in the garden. when it snowed, they just stayed in their coop with a heat lamp.

I love my australorps, and so do my neighbors. they get eggs!

They're now 11 months old and up to extra large eggs!

this is the girls peeking out after a snow. they're tough little girls and are always happy to talk to you.

Our Austalorp laid well all winter with a light in their coop. When our light burned out, she stopped laying until it was replaced. They also tend to get broody, which may or may not be a plus in your eyes!
