I have bantam black cochins and i have had birds for 10 years but i just recently started a breeding program. I bought my first breeding stock and they are black cochins. I bred them and as they grew, white started popping up. Turns out it's a different hidden color pattern. I breed goats so i am farmiliar with genetics and whatnot but is there any change someone could give me more info and how i can cull for pure blacks? I would really appreciate if you could dumb it down for me! Any info would be greatly appreciated! Thanks! I got Black birchen out of my Pure blacks.

Chances are that both parents are Melanized Birchen(ER/ER Ml/ml+) when both were crossed you got ER/ER ml+/ml+, many self blac birds are actually just melanized birchen.

Pictures would be really nice.

Also most self black birds that are based on Extended Black also carry many types of melanizers, that is how the Brassy Back OEGB and Furness Color came to be, crosses of Black with Wildtype(Brassy Back) and with Wheaten(Furness) and crossing the F1s together and a bunch of Melanizers starting to pop up on Wheaten and Wildtype background.

Also one of the parent may be Melanzied Birchen(Melanotic) and the other Melanized Extended black(recessive black and all)

Here are some Black Copper Maran chicks, they are Birchen based and as you can see Birchen have a darker chick color than Extended Black

ER based chicks(I know they are gold)
