black meat breeds, silkies ect....

That might be totally doable. I will probably choose from the biggest purebreed ayam cemani from my friend's chicks when the bresse arrive in a couple of weeks (I hope). Ideally I'm planning on housing all my new chicks together plus the 6 in the brooder box between 3-4 weeks old atm.

I started naming them. Well, one of them. The biggest haffie that is orpington leaning looking has been named Oreo. I think only 2 of my 6 may be pullets, but I've got one with very bkack pigmentation except white toenails that I suspect is a roo and pretty big with big feet/legs, no tail feathers, black under tongue, but not black mouth. I think I will make him a capon, but his size/growth so far is nice. Since so many are suspected roos, it's good I have access to 30 more chicks to choose from & getting caponizing equipment very soon! I do want to have a few of these in my freezer, as silkies seem to not be as meatie, and ayam cemani are kinda small from my seeing them vs English orpingtons, but not as small as bantam orpington... like a 2/3 size lf?

DC- no honas laying again yet? I'd gladly bring you this cooler weather we're getting right now. It's really making me think, if I don't get chicks that are very cold hardy breeds within the next 2-3 weeks then I can't get any more new chicks until the springtime, by then the ones I have now/getting in the next 2 weeks or so will be laying fertile eggs. I'm gathering separate crates to house the roos I want to breed with soon.

For 24-30 chicks how big a brooder box is best? I was thinking 2 or 3 doors with a screen door top to put in the barn so I can reclaim my bathroom.

My 26 dp meaties are doing well except the injured slw in my kitchen. She might end up getting culled this weekend, nutridrench isn't seeming to help yet and it's been over 24 hours since I brought her in, she's having problems walking/curled feet? 6-7 weeks old. WTD?

DC,But it would be interesting to see what happens with the Dominant White from the Bresse.  My guess is that introducing the Breese is going to cause the white legs to appear.  Either way there will be a need to cross back several times to a pure FM bird to maintain the genes.

Time would fly by real quick if you're eating the culls or selling them for meat..only keeping the deepest saturation of fm...I just found someone on facebook who has SouthAmerican Fm birds, with them are Sulmthalers ( also known for exquisite tasting meat ) as well as the Bresse too...trying to improve size in these fm meaties...adding FM from the South American birds...still though preserving them as a landrace fm bird.

If I knew any breeder of Sumatras that had bred to retain and even increase the hyperpigmentation to the flesh and organs of these birds,I'd sure be interested...nice idea though bluenkimchi...my only Java blood are as DK calls "halfies"..Java x Black Quechua Olmecs ( a nice fibro South American landrace chicken carrying the blue/green/pink /yellow ...etc...egg genes too) I had thought about this X with an fm Sumatra too and might have pursued this if I could find a breeder with Fm Sumatras still...as DC mentioned...they seem all white skinned now.

DC, Could you add a link or somehow lead genetics novices like myself, to a clear explanation, description of GF affecting gene..I'm also trying to digest ID ,, id+...on how these affect or cancel out fm expression....what do these look like on a bird?...so I know what I'm looking at.

I thought Bresse have blue legs and light skin, not yellow or white legs? Don't they start as yellow leg chicks, then get blue as they age?

Agree, back crossing/line breeding will have to be utilize, to maintain Fm genes for a few generations until you get stable Fm genes.

DC it's just that I've read on different fm forums your mentioning the GF gene....looking at the Sumatra except for the Gypsy Face..is tis anaha moment here??!!..GF...means Gypsy Face? ...if so how could hyperpigmented face eventually wipe out suppress pretty much the FM gene expression in the Sumatra breed ?

I don't know why this didn't add up earlier.

I have the 90% AC hybrids..eggs coming in a few days...I paid the huge extra for 'priority express'..hope for better shipping handling this way and some good fm birds from these.
They always say don't count your chickens before they're hatched...hahaha...will I ever learn?

Gloryblue,

I didn't mean that by using Black Javas and Sumatras, that these two are already Fm birds. Black Javas just have ancestors from which the Ayam Cemani was created from and the Sumatras also contain Cemani gene somewhere in there. So, if you know and have time/space/money to throw around, one can eventually breed up with a Cemani morph type bird with Black Java X Sumatra breeding.

Read from this link, then reread from the beginning of that same thread and you will get why to use those two breeds I mention above.

It is my understanding that yellow based skinned birds (yellow legs) can never become slate, if they darken it would have to be willow b/c of the base of yellow.

I think Bresse are white skin birds and have light willow color legs as chicks and turns blue.

So, you're correct with willow and darken as they age to blue.

This is willow right(the chick picture from this thread)?

Ok, if you say slate, then it is........I don't really know my leg color that well when it comes to chickens, except yellow or black Lol
