Black silkies

Lol...I'm a lil too old school to figure out how to upload videos to Youtube yet. I have figured out my digital camera for regular pics though. Amy

Take the bands and line them up beforehand so you don't have to fight with lining up the rivets while handling the bird too.

Stretch the wing out and find the loose skin.

Stick the pointed end in there.

Done... Now watch them feel sorry for themselves and pick at them for the next 2 hours. Pretty soon they forget they are even there.

It takes about 15 minutes to do a whole batch of chicks. On the older birds, its easier to have someone holding the bird for you. We all know how hard it is to find help always though. Pluck a few feathers on the underside of the skin of the wing so you don't lose your hole. Insert nail to make a hole. Put band through and clamp together. No blood and not any harder on them than piercing ears.

I've never used the wing bands . Please forgive my ignorance but --- are you pushing the pointed end thru the skin then clamping closed ? Amy have you had your baby yet ??????? I just realizied it must be time . Thank you for explaining the wing bands . --- Tammy

Yes, you can show them with bands. Once the bird gets bigger, like 6 months or more, you can barely see the band without really looking. Their feathers sort of hide them.

I have read where people prefer them to leg bands . They don't show at all unless you look for them as they grow . My only thought is how are they while they are young (do the bands get caught on other chicks ? ) Tammy

Yuppers.... The sooner you do it, the skin is more tender. On the older birds, its hard even pushing the nail through. You don't even see it once the bird is feathered out unless you go digging for the band.

You can show them with them on as far as I know. I've had enough problems with 2 legged predators that I wouldn't go without them now. The only issue I can see is maybe with show officials seeing the farm name on the band.

And yes....its beyond time! Doctor thought I'd be in labor last week already and nothing yet. Talking about inducing on monday if not yet out.

how many children do you have or is this your first ? people say your first is the most unperdictable , I don't really know about that . I was 15 when I had my first and 44 when I had my last child . I gave birth to 3 children without any problems , my last baby they did a C-section .( to many old injures the doc. said ) I will tell you I'd give birth a hundred times naturally before I'd ever opt for C-section . I've done it both ways and you heal faster natural in my opion . Well I don't know you personally but certainly have you in my thoughts and prayers . May the birth of your child be a healthy and happy one . ---- Tammy
