I think we went thru this once before. Was told it was viral and not serious, but might set chickens up to be vulnerable to something worse. I gave a course of tetracycline as prevention. Does this sound right?

Can you share a picture. Antibiotics will do nothing for a virus. Black spots can be pox or wounds from pecking to name 2 reasons.

I have a question also my Buff has a couple spots on IMG_3112.JPG her waddle and she keeps breathing heavy I put iodine on the spots what should I do

The spots do look like pox, it's a virus transmitted by mosquitoes and will run it's course. Breathing heavy could be she is hot or it could mean a respiratory infection.

X2 It does look like Fowl Pox to me as well.

Putting the Iodine on the scabs is fine, it can help them dry up, but don't pick the scabs off.

I also agree, there are many causes for breathing heavy - stress from being caught and having Iodine put on scabs:), hot weather and of course respiratory illness.

Just keep watch on her, see that she is drinking well.

Thank you so much for the input every bit of helpful info helps. It is hot here in San Diego so that could be why she's breathing heavy I will keep my eye on her now is pox contagious? We do have another Buff that has a sore or spot by her ear but that may be a peck from another lady hmmmm

The scabs can be contagious, so that's why I don't mess with them. It's also possible other birds can get infected by mosquitoes. Of all the bird diseases they can get, pox will at least heal up and go away and the bird should have immunity to it after that.
