Im not sure. I have one 9 week old peeper that is pure white. Id really like to mate him with a white hen to see what results. I just dont know if my whitey is a hen or not yet.

It is rare to keep more than 1 rooster in a flock, even when they are raised together. One rooster wants sole rights to the girls and doesn't want another roo with them. So ther is pretty much a nil chance of getting him with the rest of the group. Have you thought of getting a few hens to put with him in a pen to thamselves?

If you ever get him mated, you'll have to let us see the result, you realize!

He is just so pretty.

Guess you could try careful, supervised visits and see if he will accept her. Maybe just hold her in his vicinity or something. Just in case.

I don't think animal biology should be off-limits on a family friendly site... I'm sure kids that have hens and roosters have seen their fair share of mating.

to the OP - I have to say this was an interesting thread, lol! It made me laugh. I'm glad your little guy seems to be fine. He's gorgeous!

I agree with georgialee - I think the OP posted things in a discreet manner, not using any vulgar language. I think it was both interesting and informative. Sorry that you felt offended, rancher hicks.

I am glad you found out there is nothing wrong with your roo, but on the socialization situation.

Whom ever said it was rare to keep more than one roo was incorrect or misinformed. I have several pens with more than one roo. I like to keep 1 roo per 5 hens. I have no problems. Most of mine have been together for a while if not from birth so they have minor sparing matches, but no injuries. That being said, occasionally you get a few boogers who want to fight fight fight. You can get hens like that also. There are no guarantees in the chicken business.

IMO, you need to get 3-5 hens and put them in with him. If you think he needs to be babies and slowly introduced, put them in a small pen inside his pen for a few hrs every day for a few days and them bam, let him have them.
You say that he drives a hen crazy, well what male doesn't drive a female crazy, especially of the chicken variety. Your roo sounds a lot like this buff cockerel I used to have, man was he a horny little thing. He had 5 hens and you could sit and watch him go from one to the other for hrs at a time. I can't imagine if I only had 1 or 2 in there with him, he needed more than the 5 I had, so I bought 2 more.

It might take a few days and seem like he is not getting along with them, but he will calm down. Sounds like he is just going through a hormone phase and needs "release" LOL!!

Get him quite a few girlfriends in there and let him go to town!

I'm sure you're referring to my post. Everytime I have tried to keep more than one roo with a group of hens, I have one dominant roo, and any other roos have their combs and waddles torn off. So, no, not misinformed. Not saying it's impossible, but it's hard to introduce a hen to a group, much less a roo to a new group that already has a roo. I've seen more stories of 2 roos getting together and trying to kill each other than anyone introducing a roo to a group and them getting along.

I have watched him with my hen and he never tries to mount her. He just does his dominant roo dance at her and she runs off screaming. Actually Im afraid to pen them up together. She might have a heart attack if she cannot escape from him.

RubberChicken- you must have an aggressive roo, or an aggressive breed. I have never had a problem. I always have a dominant roo, but the other one just stays out of his way and usually only gets a hen when allowed. Like I said there are no guarantees, they all have personalities just like humans.

Lobzi- I really doubt she has a heart attack. All hens run for a while. Well, not all, I have a few who could be prostitutes....

but anyway, I wouldn't just put one hen, put at least 3 in there with him, and give them a few days. I have even heard of some people making a small place that the hen can get in, but the roo can't so that she can get a break if need be.
