In the Brooder
Sunday I saw the first bloody stool in my indoor brooder. I immediately started using Corid in the water.
Backing up a bit. My chicks have been relatively healthy in my opinion. All eating, drinking well, playing, scratching. I've kept them indoors, until about 3 weeks of age. When they were about 3 weeks old I started letting them outside for a couple of hours or so a few days a week, under close supervision. I've allowed them to eat earth worms as treats, occasionally.
At about 3 weeks, I took them off of medicated chick crumbles (Manna Pro), and switched them to starter/grower (DuMOR). I also gave them Nutri-drench (the recommended amount) for the first ~3 weeks of their lives (just to give them extra vitamins).
I change the bedding regularly, the water and food daily, I used recommended temperatures in their brooder the whole time, but now I'm faced with bloody poop.
The first bloody stool came Sunday. Since I didn't know which of the 10 produced it and they have all been together through everything I decided to treat the flock with Corid immediately. The next morning (Monday) there were several bloody stools. When I got home from work (~6 pm) there were less but still a couple of bloody stools (2). I went through everything, cleaning out re-doing bedding, food, water. I let them be, after checking crops, finding that everyone was eating and drinking fine.
After dinner I went bock to them, no bloody stools, but literally sat down with a chart and watched, waiting for all of them to poop. I wanted to identify the sick ones and see how often they are passing blood. During this process I found that not every stool is bloody, the ones passing the bloody stools only do so every so often. It seems like they pass the bloodiest ones in the morning right after I go in and wake them up.
I'm using the recommended dose of Corid, which after the math ends up being 1.18 mL per Pint. I guess I'm wondering if there is anything else I can do/should be doing, should I increase the dosage? How long does this stuff take to work IF it even is going to work? When should I see a decrease in the bloody stools? Should I attempt to dose the birds independently, and if so how much per bird?
This is really disheartening, I've had three failure to thrives when they were days old, an entire shipment that the postal service destroyed, and now these babies, are sick. I feel like I've done everything, read all the necessary articles.....these babies perk up as soon as I enter the room and run to me....
I'm just looking for anything that will help me save them...
