Found the pictures of my homemade incubator from last year. I have four mason jars on each end filled with wet sand for heat sinks. I have water containers and sponges all preposition-ed under bottom screen so I won't have to pull everything out at lock down.Just remove the turner fill with warm water and put eggs back in. The funnel and tubing is used to fill water containers without removing cover.I control the Temp. with a STC 1000 controller, about $ 20 bucks on ebay. I have three or four thermometers, but put all my faith in the spot check and use the others for reference. Last year I kept the humidity around 30-35 % until lock down then upped it to 70 % and it worked out great. But will have to watch the air cells to see if that will work again. That's my rig it seems to be working so far.

One day... one day. We homeschool and so I just love bringing things like this into our school time, and I have so many friends who fondly remember hatching eggs and raising chicks from when they were young.

It's funny, on craigslist I found incubators FOR RENT!!! I bet you could find someone local to borrow one from! But, once you hatch your first batch, then you will be hooked.....

My daughter is in a special needs classroom. I have her teacher ALMOST convinced it would be good to have at least 1 hatch in the classroom.

In addition to oreos, could somebody bring some snickerdoodles? They've been making those in the baking thread and I think they look pretty good.

Blooie, you've got one bubba named, have you started picking names for the others?

Yummm.... and Girl Scout Cookies. Someone bring those! There isn't a good Girl Scout to 'me' ratio where I live...

So hmmm... SAY one day down the road, we.. SAY... get our hands on an incubator... and SAY we get some eggs... and SAY we successfully hatch them... then what do ya'll do with your new chicks? Keep a few? Pre-sell them? Sell them as week old straight runs? Give them away?

I would say, if you have some sort of yard - small or large and you get along with your neighbors, keep a few!! List them on craigslist, and sell them. Offer them to friends! I would never pre-sell them because that puts WAY TOO MUCH pressure on me. What happens if my hatch fails?

Well, no I haven't picked out any names.  Um, is this another of those incubating eggs thingies I'm supposed to know - how to name an egg??  I missed that class, I think.

That's too funny. I have lots of names picked out for the eggs I'm hatching now. The ones that arrive in April and also for all 10 bon bons that arrive may 24th or 25th. I just have to decide who get which name!!!

I wait till they are about 4 weeks old and no longer need supplemental heat. I pick a few that are keepers, and sell the rest. Any cockerels that don't sell become dinner.
