BLRW joke - now 11 weeks old, is it a boy??! (answer in post #82)

I was thinking it looked like a late blooming roo. Those shiny wing feathers were the give away for me. All the girls I've seen can have lovely colors but they just don't have that sun catching sheen. Even my black australorps that are green and purple in the sun aren't "shiny" like that. The fact that it is as big as a couple of the older boys sorta says roo too... but keep posting pictures, might surprise us after all!

Depends on the parentage.....but I'll call it "Hybrid Vigour" and stick with pullet. Maybe she's better fed, maybe she took hormones while ya weren't looking?

I say pullet. I have 9wk old CW and SLW pullets, they all have pointy looking hackle feathers, maybe they look pointy because of the markings...my australorp and SS pullets have had "jaunty tails" for a while now. Yesterday my absolutely definitely a cockerel FBCM at 11 weeks, I discovered is a PULLET...

if you had seen this girl a few weeks ago, twice the size of her hatch mates, agressive, big red comb and wattles, huge feet and legs, stomped around like a dinosaur etc. you would have said cockerel hands down.
Now I compare her to the 2 hatch mates that are showing the male coloring/feathering, she is almost solid black with round looking hackles, compared to the others with copper pointed hackles and saddle feathers, and voila! She is now Sophia vs. Crockpot!

good luck, I think youre safe w/ a pullet, I will be watching this thread

I think you have a pullet there too, though I only have my 3 SLW girls to compare it with for feather shape. However, they have pointy looking hackles too, but they are definitely girls.
As for color, I think she pulled a bad lot at the gene pool. She just lacks lacing that you want. Lacing comes in all degrees, so maybe she was the shallow end of the pool. Poor Scarlet. She is just a young thing, so maybe in time she will look more attractive to you.

I will definitely post new pics of Scarlet once this horrendous heat wave breaks, if we're lucky it should be over the weekend... poor flocks are hanging on by a sweaty thread!

So far Scarlet hasn't changed much so I don't know what's going on.

She has the face of a girl, the legs of a boy, and her feathering could go either way right now
