Blue Andalusian thread!

Rock N' Faverolles :

My blue andalusain pullets have slow comb growth. Andalusians aren't supposed to have big floppy combs. Yes they flop over but they aren't supposed to be that big. They're supposed to have a medium sized comb. Here is a picture for an example. For mine, the combs don't even get large enough to flop over until they are pretty much mature, and this pullets has a couple months left before she even lays her first egg. So she's aways from being mature.

Very nicely marked pullet!

Hi guys! I have questions!
1) When can I move my babies outside to their coop/run? At what age? I have read I should do it gradually.
2) I live in a small town. Is it necessary to close them up in their coop every night?? I have, what I think, a pretty secure fence for them.

Thanks so much,
Lisa

Can you post some pictures? I know that our boys had combs and wattles coming in faster than the girls did.

We wait until they are completely feathered out and depending on the weather as well. We have moved birds out this fall to the outdoor coop/run and they are around 3 months old. We let them stay inside the coop for a day and then the next day opened the run door so they could decide. Don't know if it is possibel for you to add a heat lamp to an area of the coop if they needed it.

We shut the run doors to the coop every night just to be on the safe side even though our runs are pretty secure.

I would give them another couple of weeks and the males will start growing out their combs and wattles, which will turn red before the females do. Maybe posting some pictures would help.

I am glad you all liked the pullet. She is one of six pullets like that, that I'll be using in the breeding pens. I already put together two breeding pens with the older hens. The hens are just coming off molt and are beginning to lay. I'll be setting my first Andalusian eggs hopefully the end of next week.

Three 2 1/2 week old Blue Andalusians (2 Black and 1 Blue) - no comb difference:

Here they are again at almost 6 weeks of age - I'm pretty sure the black one in my hand is a male (photo taken last week) - You can see a big difference in the comb growth on his comb verus the other 2.

You can see his wattles starting to to turn red in this photo:
