Blue Andalusian thread!

Just starting to have DD think about which Andalusians should be paired together for the upcoming year. We kept 2 roosters and 3 cockerals back and around 8 hens/pullets. Will also have to start adding back light to get the laying going again.

We have a splash rooster and put a couple black hens in with him last year- hatched out some chicks whiched developed some nicer looking lacing- both cockerals that we kept so DD is excited to see what will be produced for chicks for her 4-H project this year.
how do you use a black light to help with laying. I usually use a normal light that turns on in the morning to help with laying during the winter. I never heard of using a black light.

Actually H&R said adding back light by which I believe they meant incrementally increasing light to stimulate laying.

Hello, this is Silver my 8 week old BA hatchery chick. Hopefully she is a pullet, but I guess time will tell. I have no aspirations for her other than being a pet and giving us eggs now and again, but was wondering if her head is supposed to be black like most of the pictures of BA on this thread. If it is will it change color as she gets older or will it stay the color it is now. As you can tell I am pretty new to chickens in general and BAs in particular. She is a very calm and friendly bird and especially likes my husband and will fly up and sit on his lap. .

She may get a little darker. Her color looks pretty good. She is definitely a girl. If she were a boy, you'd know by the time she was a month old or sooner. The heads are actually supposed to be "dark blue to black" if I remember the correct words in the standard. I don't have it out right now.

Their personalities are quite enjoyable sometimes. Other times they can seem to be quite insane so enjoy her!

Thanks for the reply. I did go out and look more closely and her head is darker than her body, but not quite black. I love her coloring, she is really pretty in the sunlight.

I was wondering if anyone here have had a broody Andalusian? I've already searched the web and most sites are saying that it is a non-setter breed; but one can hope?!
