Question for those of you that have hatched out chicks, at what age can you start detemining who are boys and who are girls? We watch for comb development and if it turns red-which we seem to start seeing around 4 weeks of age. Has one noticed if tail feathers grow in faster on one sex over the other? We have 4 chicks from our second hatch, they are 1.5 weeks old and 2 have tail feathers and 2 are just starting to get them.

Hi All. Recently, at the Stockton Poultry Show I noticed the Blue Andalusian hens had floppy combs.
I have one BA hen and her comb is upright and very rigid. Is it going to remain like this or flop over as she gets older? My hen is only 8 months old.
Just curious...I won't be showing her, she's a pet. BUT she is one of my favorites.

We have a gorgeous hen, about a year old and are considering ordering some eggs hoping for a roo in the batch. She bosses all the other hens (BCMs, Leghorns and *golden* chicken conglomerate from some guy in Bend OR). I had a chance to get a roo but the owner, thank goodness for honesty, let me know he was quite combative and aggressive, definitely NOT what I need!

Good luck with the hatching eggs, my DD is working with the Andalusians for her 4-H project we have a small group 2 roosters and 4 hens and hatched out 15 chicks this year so far.

Has she started laying yet? Our girls combs started to flop when they begain to lay and some more than others.

She was my first hen to start laying and has been now for a few months.
I just love here very rooster-like comb...I want it to stay.

Wonderful Hens and Roos they look good.

I go by the combs to sex them the roosters always show red early ,and I've never been wrong with my Andalusian chicks.
I always forget to watch the tail feathers and by the time they are all feathered in I know by the combs.

Lets see if I did this right, posting a pic of our Andalusian girl.
