Blue Copper and Splash Copper Marans Discussion

Pics
They are all from the same parents. Will, the Black Copper male and Darryl, my Splash Copper hen. They will not be going anywhere as they are the reason I was doing single test matings, so that I had more to grow out and watch from testing the BCM.

Got a quick photo of that other Blue Copper gal I am borrowing back from my BFF. Give me just a second and I will get it loaded.
Very good, they should definitely give you a good idea of what you are working with in terms of seeing if there will be copper from the mating!

She has one long point on her comb and she needs help in the leg feathering dept. as it is light. She really is blue.....just very dark blue, but has AWESOME edging. However, her hackle shows not one stitch of copper. It actually looks black.

Sorry, best photo I was getting of her today. Me thinks she doesn't like me right now cause I took her from her real home.

I have a girl that looks quite a lot like her! How's the openness on her tail?

She needs work on the open tail, but it is not pinched so that is good.
Have a photo of the tail and of her edging, trying to load those. BRB.

Does your girl have one long silly point too?

Well I thought I took a pic of her tail, but guess I didn't. Will get you one though.
Here is a pic of her edging. She is not really this lighter color blue trust me. I was out taking photos today during the brightest part of the day and having fun with the chickens, chicks and new goslings.

not that one, but I do have another one with uneven points like that. Nice clean comb otherwise and did not pass to offspring in the test matings I did last year

Question.... this tagging or marking chicks is evading me. Just not having tons of luck. I have resorted to toe punching, but how would you mark the ones you want to watch the ones with the more white? I am marking them by what pen they came from but what more marking do you do? I can use the vet wrap but that can come off, why I resorted to toe punching. I have some SMALL spiral bands but have not used them yet. I assume you have to change them as they grow and I don't have bigger ones.

It is good to hear that it did not pass on. I can't wait to start testing her. I'm going to cross her to Lil' Bill. I fear if I cross her to Will that I will just be going toooooooo dark.
Wish I had a nice Splash Copper rooster to use instead, but such is life.

Depends on how many I'm watching to be honest. I have two different kinds of bands I use, they come in different colors, and just keep a legend so I can keep track in my records. If I'm watching quite a few, I just raise them in separate brooders and put a tag on the whole brooder so I know who is who. If you are talking the small spiral bands that look just like the bigger spirals used on older birds, they are a giant pain in the you know what.

Donna~ How old are the birds you want to mark or band?
Do you have any of the numbered bandettes or maybe even a metal band?
The small spiral bands scare me. I used one once.......with in a couple days it had cut into the chicks' leg.
