Young, day olds really. I want to watch the ones with the nicer white markings like you and Vicki are talking about. I hatched one the other day that was PERFECT and I would like to track it. Mine have been not as white (on the face and up the neck) as this one. It was just really different. Very white on the face and stark white and black not yellow or gray.

No I don't have the metal bands.

I use the vet wrap after hatching and it stays put for a couple weeks or more. I fold the ends over and mash them together tight and have not had a problem with them falling off.
When the wrap gets old I replace it until the chick is old enough so that a numbered bandette doesn't fall off. Usually by about 5-6 weeks I slip a #9 bandette on them and it doesn't fall off. #9 is the same size I use on all my females, when the males get older I can change the bandette to a size 11.

I use the vet wrap too. Some colors just work better than others. Some fall off easy for some reason. Maybe if I use some pliers to mash it together better.

As time allows you should post a pic of the little one.

Haha.... OK on the other thread since it is a black copper.

Another Question.... do you cull at hatch for coloration? I get about 1/2 with the better white markings... not as good as the one I was asking about but normal like your pink. I think Vicki does I am sure Don does. I would like to really improve quickly and if that would be a HUGE help I can do that.

Funny, the best colored one I have found is the pink one.....not just because I like pink either, LOL, it just works better. Like it has more stick. The neon yellow and green are good too, but still they aren't as stiff or sticky as the pink.
The teal blue and the purple STINK out loud.

Ok, here's the bands I use. The first ones usually are tightly rolled when they first come, but unroll them a couple times and they loosen right up. Once these are loosened up I can usually get a couple of weeks out of them before they need to be changed, after that I have spirals I use then.

here is the other kind I use, they are something my uncle has been using for the last couple years and likes them a lot. These come in a variety of sizes and are elastic so allow for quite a bit of grow time without trouble.

No, I do not cull at hatch for coloration because chick down is not indicitive of adult plumage and I like to watch them grow out. Will say though, I might be inclined to cull at hatch for color if I was hatching as many as yourself, Don and Vicki, but I since I have slowed down tremendously and am trying to rebuild my stock again, I will watch all of what I hatch grow out from these single test matings.
