I agree totally. The eye color alone isnt why I'm replacing Delilah in the breeding pen-it's that her sire also has the same light eyes, so they probably will produce more light eyed chicks than you'd want. She has great body and head type. I've been very pleased with the chicks we have been getting from Suede. Just like any breeder, though, you keep the best and closest to the standard that you have. One of Suede's sons even won Best Large Fowl Cockerel at a show in TN recently.

A quote from The Orpington and Its Varieties, by E. Campbell with notes on White, Jubilee, Spangled, Cuckoo. Blue and Red Orpingtons by Wm. H. Cook and Australorps by W. Powell-Owen, copyright Sept, 1922

“The worst defects I have seen during the past breeding season, and which I strongly advise all breeders to avoid, are light-coloured eyes, white in lobe, feathered legs, and the male birds being too long in leg or shank. Like natural produces like, and if one get the above faults among one’s stock it will take several years to breed out. It is far better to breed from a well-matched trio than to keep a whole pen several of which may have these failings.”

I was looking for my book yesterday and just found it. I wanted to quote this article.

Julie, I agree with you if that is all you have and it is nice to breed from it. I myself would not unless it was a exceptional hen.

To everyone else new looking to breed Orpingtons: When buying stock for breeding or exhibition it is best to buy the the most you can afford. I have learned this is very true, you do get the quality you buy if you know what you are looking for. I just thought I would share this quote from a book that I found. Its always good to get a diffrent view or a opinion on things.

ETA: Last part was not directed at you Julie.

all this typey talk is confusing to me. I just buy eggs from Cyn and Juile and hope they turn out great.

Just don't mix them with Zunibee's blue Jersey Giants. It just leads to months of total confusion.

It's a sad state of affairs when I'm the smartest chicken person around here. It's hard to learn from others. I should start hanging out at the fair and learning from others, but there are always crowds at the fair

I think it great that we can learn from each other and that is why I try to learn more everyday. I know what you mean about crowds at fairs. Someone told me around 2mil. come threw the Puyallup fair. Just amazing.
