the buckeye has exploded the last couple of years... i expect the ALBC will move it on the list soon... they are always behind times because it takes so long and so much work to do a breed senses... so if your wanting the rarer bird go with the RCRIR... IMO the average buckeye is a way better bird than the average RCRIR... but idk how Duane Urch's birds compare maby call and ask him...

Not really rarer, but I guess I do like the idea of helping a rarer breed IF it meets my needs. Why do you think the Buckeye is better?

Why is the Buckeye better than what ?

Better at what ?
For your climes, maybe, as the Bucks have a smaller comb tighter to the head ?
A rose comb bird does not have a comb close to the head, it is not as tall as a standard comb bird. But it (rose comb) is large and UP there..
Cold climes would say pea comb or cushion comb.

Several of us are working to improve the Buff Chantecler. Maybe if you could get a male from one of the CFI members near you. Mike Gilbert is working with a patridge x buff cross. Some are using a Buff Rock male on Buff Chantecler hens. Please don't drop the buffs. Add something else, but keep a small breeding project of the Buffs. We need at least 5 breeders for at least 5 years and then 50 birds to get them entered in the SOP.

Got a message today wanting to know who you may know who has many breeds of large fowl that are from good breeders . In example was a breeder in the Carolinas who has excellent birds for each breed she has. She got her starters from the top breeders in the country. This is a amazing thing to have so many breeds and yet can keep the type and color at a respectable level.

Who else do you know that has say ten or more breeds of large fowl that we can share with others. Yesterday I got a phone call from a fellow in Georgia who wants Barred Rock Large Fowl. He does not want to show them just wants birds that are not coo coo in color or production type barred chickens. Look forward to your suggestions. I am getting requests for birds and there is no way we can help these people unless I have new leads of other breeders that I don't know of. However, I want to keep away from any disappointments.

Look forward to your suggestions to put on a master list. bob

lol im a HE not a She lol... i have buckeyes and have a good friend with RCRIR (im on the list to get some from her) ive had no trouble with the buckeyes... buy she has had alot of trouble with fertility... 3 roosters have gone infertile after they where 1 year old... she ordered in an adult rooster from a different bloodline in 2010... hatched a bunch of chicks and is now keeping 6 to 8 roosters...and they don't lay well... she is hoping that the new roosters daughters will lay better and with all the roosters she will have great fertility in 2011... she has been raising them for 4 years... they are supper nice type and color as good or better as any ive seen on BYC...
i have heard of other people with similar troubles with the RCRIR...

now after saying all that ill add my disclaimer lol... you noticed i said average for both breeds... i think it is way easier to get good buckeyes than to get good RCRIR's... and im sure there is bloodlines out there that don't have any of these problems... in fact if i remember right Chris09 has said that he has not had these problems with his RCRIR's...

so do your homework... ask lots of ??? to the breeder you get stock from... and get the best you can afford... and good luck...

They both have excellent Rose Combs.

His buckeye are outstanding as are his Black, Buff and White Wyandotte.

If you are up to the challenge of breeding party colored birds Duane has excellent Wyandotte's in several varieties if you want a variety that needs help in preservation I would look at Silver Pencilled, Columbian, Partridge or Golden Laced. He has some of the best Golden Laced in the country.

Brahma would be another party colored breed to consider. He has excellent Dark Brahma.

Any of the above would be great in ND. I love Brahma large fowl they lay fairly well and will process out at a tasty 7 plus pounds at 29 to 32 weeks. They are excellent for roasting, soup or stew.

I am in Mankato, MN about 45 miles from Duane and know him well. I have Dark and Light Brahma. It was 24 below with 38 below windchill for a couple of days a week ago and we have had 59 inches of snow so far this year. I do not heat the coop and they are usually outside on their own everyday. They love MN. no matter if it is hot or cold.

In my opinion any of the birds I have listed are in need of a lot of help especially the party colors.
