Stevenson: How many from this thread are planning on attending the Crossroads show in Indianapolis?

I'll be there with a few young birds

I can't make it to Crossroads..

Morning all.....just thought I'd post a couple pix of 2 pullets (Col Rock LF) that I am watching. They are approaching 5 months old.

For all you experts and experienced judges that frequent here, is it my being "in-expereienced" at this still or do their tails appear to be too long? Looks like their mail tail feathers are 1/3 the total length of their bodies....any critiques/advise? Thanks

I don't think I have ever heard of a Rock tail being too long. Rocks can have short backs and that is not going to be a problem for yours in the pictures. I really like the females I see in the pics.

Thanks Walt.....these pullets are from the trio Beth helped me to get from the Nationals last year that came out of Canada. First year with Columbian Rocks and DEFINITELY the first year trying to raise birds to the "standard". Good to know that I don't have a major fault that I need to cull for. Thanks again, I truly appreciate your expert advise and opinions!!!

Morning all.....

This thread has gotten very quiet! Where is everybody!!!????

Anyway, I have a Columbian Rock pullet (about 8 months old) with 1 twisted feather in her tail. Not sure if it will moult out or not

Other than that, she is a far cry better than her mother or her aunt(s), so, I would like to use her next year as a breeder. BUT, I don't know if twisted feathers are an inherited trait or not and really don't want to pass along bad genetics that will just cause me trouble down the road

Does anyone know??

Thanks

Pull the feather out and see how it grows back in. Grasp it gently at the very root and just firmly pull it out. If it grows back twisted, you know it's a genetic thing.

I am not certain it is genetic even if it regrows as crooked. The base tissue itself could be damaged causing all regrowth to be twisted. If damage in both sides of bird and/or involving feathers in multiple locations, then genetics more likely to a cause.
