Wow Its a good thing I didn't say I would shoot myself I would have had two pages. What color in the neck and tails Kathy on your project. in the beginning the color was not there washed out so congratulations great work on this project. The black chickens with the white spots from Delaware what a nice strain of Heritage chickens. That looks wonder full. The reds in Arkansas are a hoping you should have some nice ones to choose from this year. All other keep them a going and take pictures. You are doing a great service to our hobby and hopefully others will want your birds for them selves and help keep these weak breeds a going in numbers. Thanks for posting and keeping the Heritage tread alive. Its been going for a long time. bob

Kathy, I hate flattery, but I have to say again . . . good job. They are looking very good.

For anyone that does not know, Kathy literally has started from scratch.

Bob, I could not tell you honestly how many I have hatched and started (200?). Maybe too much, but it will give me a shot at improvements. Time will tell.

This thread has done well. There is a common interest here. I do hope that we are mindful of what these birds should be, or were. We are not doing any good if we are just raising pretty look "a likes". There is plenty of them in some breeds.

I like those Black Wyandottes.

No heritage to be found around here, looks like im stuck with TSC straight run production Reds.
Not the end of the world i guess..

There are 7 APA/ABA sanctioned shows in NY & at least 200 breeders of quality birds. PM me with your location & what breeds you're interested in. I should be able to point you toward someone not to far from you.

Thanks! Rose comb Anconas were on the brink, and they're still far from secure in population. although we're doing our best to remedy that.

Well, yes, it seems that the thread isn't dead, yet, once again, thank you for the reading assignment. It's always great to go through the old mags. The articles are great; it seems that Minorcas are the focus of the lion's share of the articles/ The adds are also great to give an idea of the diverse poultry culture and the wide variety of breeders advertising stock for sale. I wish we had this culture now instead of the hatchery culture that dominates current trends.

There was also a great little article putting forth the Campine for serious consideration as a utility fowl, which would be awesome to see. We've very much enjoyed seeing the Anconas in large flocks; it would be great to see large Campines thus.

Hi Bob.....
I'm working on my Delaware project. My F2s are nearing point of lay, and I have to choose which cockerel I am going to use first. I have a few I will use, but I have only 3 females, so it will be slow going.

Here is one of my F2s today. I know he is over the standard weight for Delawares, but I am gonna use him anyway. Building the barn......

Great job with the Dels Kathy!! You are almost there.

If I lived in New York and wanted some old fashion New York Heritage Large fowl I would be making a trip to New York Reds farm. I would be getting me some of his Rhode Island Red large fowl.

I would be happy with a dozen eggs or five young started Chicks. He has a great strain and they would be so pretty in your barn and yards this summer.

New York has a great history for Heritage Fowl. bob

It took me about 3 weeks, but I finally finished reading this thread!

So much good info--I saved some of it onto a word document for future reference. I would love to help perpetuate heritage breed when I have some experience. It's been great to see how helpful you all have been to each other for finding good birds! It will be a good long while before I come around asking for help, though; first I have to figure out if I can keep chickens alive, much less breed them hehe! So....my first flock is going to be a hatchery assortment. Yall keep this thread going!
Fair warning I may come back here years later looking for some White Faced Black Spanish...

...hopefully they won't be extinct by then. May be forced to "start where I am with what I have" with some hatchery stock...
