Well candled my Heritage RIR eggs. I'm hoping everything cont. on course. I got my eggs from Roslyn Pickens (Ryan, Autry, and Mohawk lines). I'm gonna breed back into mine, that has been in our family for 5 generations. I have a question for the forum, what were the lines that produced the pearl legs in the heritage RIR. My Grandfather had some when I was 5 or 6 years old almost 40 years ago?

Bob--anyone use show sheen? It puts a shine on horses with a polymer. Not sure of chicken show rules. It is a spray on. Might not be good for chickens as the preen and play with their feathers whereas a horse doesn't. ANyone try it?

Fred--handsome bird!

Ash andVine-- I was really shocked to see few LF at a big show. Mostly bantams. And a smattering of ducks, turkeys and geese. Disappointing. Folks were nice though. I have a SSH a handsome fellow that is quick on his feet and impossible to catch, unless he has gone to roost for the night.

Above is some pictures of my Buff Brahma Cockerels for this year. They are young about 6 to 5 1/2 months old. I had the hardest time taking pictures of them they have not been on the ground much and wanted to eat grass then I put two down and they wanted to fight and then my little dog wanted to help. I had a friend who sent me these birds five years ago who wanted to see them so I figured I would send him this link to his computer and let you see what Buff Brahmas look like if you have not seen any be for. Very Docile pretty and great mothers with chicks.

Just got back from a Poultry Meeting in Pensacola Florida boy its going to be a great show. They have four great judges, its going to be in the Floral Barn not the little poultry barn they think we may have 800 entries which for our first winter show that's huge. I think in about two or three years it will be one of the top Poultry Winter Shows in the South.

If you can make it you should try to make it. We all ready have four killer judges who want to come for our late March Spring show.

Hope you have a great week.

Be very careful with Show Sheen on white birds. They will end up either greasy,or dusty looking, if you bathe them too far ahead. You can get pure Silicone spray in the Auto Dept at Wal-Mart. Spray a TINY bit on your hands the day before judging, and use a silk cloth to smooth the feathers. Wilbur Stauffer taught me that. Don't use this on whites that are not PURE whites, as it can bring out brass.

Bob,
On birds/ Livestock I use either;

Orvus,

or

Sullivan's Bright Lights Whitening Shampoo,

Don't use Dish Soap, Dish Soap is designed to remove grease and oils and it can/ will pull oils from the birds feathers.

Chris

That's why they use Dawn to rescue birds caught in oil spills. Not because it's good at cleaning birds but because it's good at removing oil.
I use a 3 step process: Tide laundry liquid in the first tub-it contains color brightening compounds that really make the colors pop. In the next tub, which is the first rinse, I use some white vinegar which removes the soap residue. I the 3rd tub I use some Glycerin which restores the gloss & softens the feathers. In the case of white or predominately white birds I add a 4th step: an additional rinse with just a few drops of Blueing which really brightens the white. As Bob said be careful about the amount of Blueing. A couple years back at a 4H show a girl brought up a bright blue Sultan for showmanship. I asked her if someone told her to use some Blueing when she bathed her bird. She ssaid yes & that she'd added a capful to the rinse water. It made for a very pretty blue bird.
I squeegee them dry with a towel in the direction of the feathers & then blow dry them. If it's a warm sunny day I don't dry them all the way but let them finish drying in the sun. While they're drying they preen their feathers & end up looking great..
