Loved reading through here, we haven't covered all the pages but got about halfway

Congrats to everyone on their success!

We are starting in breeding Dominiques and have had a hard time finding quality birds in our area, on our space limit, etc. We don't have huge multiple pens set up, we're just kind of culling and picking the best birds we can. I got in a major car accident this summer, so that really set back our plans, but we did get a couple of more shipments of chicks - but not too much luck there. We've got a couple of leads for possible spring shipments of good SQ birds as well as some other project flock birds, we can't wait!

When you see the photos of the Barred Rocks on here, and you see what a real Dominique looks like, you could never mistake the two! It frustrates us when people get them confused (relating back to some of the first few posts on people asking if your BRs were Domineckers). The quality rocks have such tiny bars, they remind me of zippers for some reason every time I look at them

. They have so many feathers it seems, like a strange silkie someone took a hair straightener to or something! Lovely, but we just are in love with the Dominique shape - that upright, proud posture and tail set, and the curvy back to go along with those high angles.

Love the thread, will subscribe and keep updated. If anyone knows of anyone that ships day-old nice Dominique chicks this late in the year, we're thinking of setting a batch of eggs and busting out the brooder light for one more round before winter! We'd love some nice pullets for the spring!

Here are some of our birds. Need lots of improvement, but they show some promise. If anyone has any comments, please post! We love to hear both positive and negative feedback, to kind of confirm/deny our fears.

Will try to get better photos some day soon. We still haven't found the camera since the move, so had to use a friend's to take these, and it was a very cold and windy day...

Just copying and pasting from our other thread....

I should ad, the first roo (Chanticleer)'s comb was half pecked off by a RIR hen when he was pretty young. It mostly healed, but the tip was pretty much taken off, so his beautiful comb is ruined

... He is such a good rooster though and just looks beautiful when he struts (which he never did the day I had the camera!!!). The wind was crazy, so most of the photos have fluffy feathers and wind-blown tails, but at least they're pictures!

Do chickens EVER stand still and look pretty when you're trying to take pictures? It's a terrible day for it, it's sprinkling rain and very windy, but I'm sick of waiting!!

A few of the girls and Chanticleer doing what they do best... eating!

One of the hens looking mischevious..

Chanticleer mid-stride, bound and determined to not show off his pretty shape. I never got a good picture of him in the half hour I braved the cold.

Here are a couple of photos of Leroy, just because he was the only one that really wanted his picture taken!

The mischevious hen is a good looking bird. The barring in a Rock is a straight line and the Dominique has V shaped barring. That is why it looks so different. and as noted the BR has finer lines in the barring

I think the Mother Earth news article has a bit of misinformation when it refers to the Del markings as Columbian- that could mislead beginners.

The Delaware club site is up and running, Marty bought it after the other one went dead. It needs work and tweaking, but it's there. I had joined over a year ago, but never heard anything from anyone, and no information was ever given on the site, so I am glad Marty is trying to do something.
I would really like to get the club active and going, but I don't really know how to do that.

fowlman01...would you please put into words and explain/clarify the difference between barred and cuckoo? I can visually tell the difference in the 2 varieties in my flocks, but it's very hard to find the right words to explain it to other folks.

If it would help anyone, could two good examples of BR and Dom be posted side by side here? That might help some of us, too.
