General type heritage question - out of the two which is a better layer and has more friendly temperament - i am seeing alot of knowledge in this thread --- Java's or Dominiques? Plus from what i read these are the two oldest american breeds

Dominiques were admitted in 1874 to the Standard. They should lay more eggs, will be a little more flighty and cocks weigh about 7 lbs.
Javas were admitted in 1883 to the Standard. They will be a little more calm as a rule and cocks weigh 9.5 lbs.

There are a lot of variables when buying birds. You should talk to the breeders you are thinking of getting either variety from and ask about there strong and weak traits. Don't be afraid to ask what needs improvement in the birds you are looking at. There is no perfect bird IMO. If someone can't come up with any faults I would probably walk away. Some strains of the same breed are bred for eggs. some for meat and some for show.

Inkhart did you go to the big chicken show in your back yard a few weeks ago?

There is a breeder of Black Javas in Kansas Monty is his first name and he says they lay very well. He rasies them to old fashion standards and they should do well. I have a freind New York Reds who has some very nice Dominiques. I dont know which ones lay the most eggs but he has built up this strain to the level where he won Res Champion American at a show in New York. I have never heard a Dominique winning like this in 50 years. So they must be true to breed and or Standard. bob

Urch in Minn has them as well. Do you plan to show them or just want them for personel use? bob

Light Brahma HEAVEN. Charlie got some great Light Brahmas from Mark Peterson a few months ago. If there was ever a heritage breed of Standard Fowl these chickens sure fit the bill.

Look at the color and type on these babies. I started with production light brahmas as a 12 year old. When I showed them and saw birds like these I new I was sold a bad bill of goods.

So they are in Minn in the cold and snow where they have been breed for years and years by Mark and his brother.

Charlie is a big fan of old type breeds and will have a surpize for you all to look at as he builds it.
